Mom Furious That School Wouldn't Allow Her Son To Wear Braids

A mother in the U.K. believes the school treated her son badly when they kicked the young man out of class for his new hairstyle. While the school considers the boy's hair 'extreme', the mother argues it's a double-standard. Girls are allowed to wear braids to class, she says.

Trisha Jukes says her 15-year-old son, Jordan Waterfield, should not have been kicked out of class for his hairstyle. The young man came back after mid-term holidays with a new 'do that features all but the crown of his head shaved close. The long hair at the crown was braided in cornrows, and held in a ponytail at the back of his head.

According to Jukes, girls wear braids all the time. "I never imagined there’d be a problem with Jordan’s hair, girls go to school with plaits in, so why couldn’t my son."

The mom says she doesn't think a hairstyle should have interfered with her son's learning. "As soon as I found out that he was put in isolation I was shocked, his hair cut wasn’t bothering anyone.... It’s a shame that he has missed out on a big chunk of education for the day just because of his hair."

According to the RSA Academy in Tipton, Jordan's hair is not appropriate for the classroom. the deliberation occurred over the course of a few days when Waterfield first showed up with the braids. He'd found the style first on YouTube and tried it for himself.

At first, the young man was passed around from one staff member to another so they could examine his hairstyle, and ultimately, he was sent back to class. He then shaved two lines into his head, which apparently irritated the administration even more. When they noticed the hair, they sent him to isolation for the rest of the day.

"It wasn’t until Friday morning that I received a phone call from the school telling me that they had put him into isolation because of the lines in his hair," said Juke. "I was told that I either had to shave the lines out, or he would be in isolation until they grew out... The only problem is, if I shave them out of his hair, it means his hair will be even shorter and subsequently even messier."

Juke said the teen always wore his uniform neat and adhered to school dress codes in the four years he'd been attending.

"If other people in his school are allowed to have plaits in their hair, my son should be too. It isn’t an ‘extreme haircut’ in the slightest."

The school refused to comment on the young man’s hairstyle or any disciplinary actions they might have taken. According to the dress code offered on the school website, “Hair should be neat, tidy and safe with no extremes of fashion – tramlines and/or patterns are not allowed. Where hair is colored, it should be natural shades only.”
