When Young Single Mom Can't Find A Babysitter, Her College Professor Steps Up

It's not easy being a single mother, especially when you're going to college in an effort to make a better life for your child. Finding a babysitter when one bails on you can always be a struggle.

One student contacted her professor to tell him that she was stuck without someone to watch her little boy, and he deserves a major pat on the back for what he did.

Ashton Robinson can't praise her Texas A&M University professor, Dr. Henry Musoma, enough. The single young mom jumped on Facebook to share her inspiring story.

It's an important reminder that, rather than brushing off other people and their problems, just a little kindness and compassion can go a long way.

“So today I emailed my Professor before class saying that something came up and I didn’t have a sitter for Emmett and he called me back and said to please bring him!” said the student on her Facebook page. “Being a single mom is so challenging but it’s people like Dr. Henry Musoma that make life just a tiny bit easier!”

Musoma went above and beyond the call of duty, however. The cheerful, smiling professor even picked up little Emmett during class so his mom could take notes. He cradled the adorable baby boy in one arm as he walked back and forth lecturing.

The little boy was staring, seeming fascinated by the professor's lecture. He might have just been one of Msuoma's most attentive students.

A lot of people who have known Dr. Musoma say that they aren't surprised. Apparently, that's just the kind of guy he is.

“I went to college with Henry! This story doesn’t surprise me one bit – he was always such a kind and compassionate guy," said an old friend.

Other single moms came forward to share that their professors had been similarly helpful to them. “I was a junior in college and had my son Devonte," said Loni Horner. "There were a few times that I didn’t have daycare for him and the professor of my major told me the same thing. Bring him with you. It was amazing and actually he would get passed around the room so everyone got a chance to meet him.”

Talia Smith said in graduate school, one of her classmates, a single mom, brought in her little girl when she couldn't get a sitter. Other students were a little worried because the teacher had a reputation of being a tough professor and 'wasn't the most friendly'.

“My professor must have sensed the shift in the atmosphere or something because she stopped and said ‘No no no bring that child up here. This is an institution of learning. We’re going to give you two for the price of one here,'" said Smith.

Finishing her education is the best thing a single mom can do, not just for herself and her child, but for society. She’ll be far less likely to need public assistance, and she’ll be better able to give her own kid a leg up to higher education. Professors lending a helping hand are doing a major service to the country.
