Daycare Under Fire After Staff Cut 7-Year-Old Girl's Hair Without Parental Permission

Denise Robinson, the mother of Tru Robinson, a 7-year-old girl from Connecticut, has accused staff members at Little Heroes Group Home of assault after they shaved her daughter’s hair without permission. When Tru came home without her natural brown ringlets, her mother couldn’t understand why staff – who repeatedly told Tru that her ringlets would “grow back straight” – singled out the bi-racial girl to be shaved.

Outraged and upset, Ms. Robinson took to Facebook to vent about the incident. In a lengthy post, slamming staff at the children’s home and begging people to help her find some answers. “Tru was assaulted yesterday at school and anyone who knows me know that I never claim racism — But why was my daughter’s head shaved?” began Ms. Robinson. “There are three other girls in her class, two white girls, one black, none of these girls got scaled. Why Tru?? My child is mixed race and her hair WAS FULL and curly… She DID NOT AND I REPEAT [NOT] HAVE HEAD LICE OR BUGS!! SO WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?”

When the viral post reached the Little Heroes Group Home administration, a spokesperson for the behavioral school reached out to Ms. Robinson. According to Yahoo, the school representative was unable to give Denise a straightforward answer, frequently telling the angry mother that her daughter had been shaved for “hygienic reasons.”

Shortly after contacting Denise, the Little Heroes Group Home released the following statement: “The program employs a diverse staff that is attentive to the needs of all children. Decisions regarding grooming are based on a variety of factors, including hygiene…A review of the circumstances is underway to determine what occurred and, if necessary, appropriate action will be taken.”

After this statement was released, Ms. Robinson immediately contacted local media outlets, telling NECN: “There was no hygienic reason for them to shave my child’s head. There was no head lice, there were no bed bugs. There was no – what I refer to – as rasta locks going on…Her hair was two pony tails on the side on Saturday and it was braided in the ponytails and there was nothing wrong.”

Unsurprisingly, Ms. Robinson has already pulled her children out of the children’s home. The outraged mother has also filed a lawsuit against the untrustworthy organization. “I am very upset,” said Robinson. “And I’m not going to stop being upset because I feel like my child was assaulted and violated.” Richard Kendall, the Robinson family lawyer, has come out in support of Denise and her daughter, telling CBS Boston: “For them to do this, it’s very upsetting, not just to me but to her.”

The response from online commentators has been overwhelmingly in support of Ms. Robinson. The most common viewpoint was succinctly captured by ‘MichaelK’, who lambasted the child’s home, writing: “I do not see how any grown person would not see this as an issue. Never cut a child’s hair without parental consent.”
