DNA Results Confirm Texas Couple's Worst Nightmare, They Were Given The Wrong Child

Having a new baby is supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life, but for Richard Cushworth and his wife Mercedes Casanella it was not the case when they had a feeling something wasn’t quite right after their son was born.

According to the BBC.com, Casanella knew the baby she held after having a cesarean section in El Salvador was different than the one she was sent home with.

When the couple returned to the U.S., blood tests confirmed the child wasn’t theirs.

In an interview, Casanella stated that after she told the doctor and nurses she felt she was given the wrong baby, they dismissed her concerns saying she was given numerous drugs during birth and was not thinking straight.

"It's a horrible situation for me, for her (his wife) for my family, her family,” Cushworth told BBC.com. “A child is an experience you have for a lifetime... this is a lifelong injury that's very, very deep, and it's horrible."

They believe they were victims of child traffickers and are accusing the Salvadoran hospital of swapping their son.

A judge ordered that the children be switched back about four months after they were born and are now with their rightful families.

The doctor who delivered the babies denied any wrongdoing and is currently being prosecuted by authorities

"We don't have anything against the people who were involved during the baby's birth, but we want all these people to put their hands on their hearts because from the doctor who performed the surgery, the paediatrician, anaesthesiologist, and the two nurses who were in the delivery room, it's very important for them to tell us what happened,” the couple’s lawyer told BBC.com.
