Doctors Open Up Mom During C-Section, Horrified By What They Find

A mommy blogger took to writing on social media about a close call that really shook her. The mother had a difficult pregnancy, with a lot of ups and downs. When her daughter was born, the doctor was shocked to find that things could have been much, much worse.

Rebecca Meldrum, a Scottish blogger, says that she had a very difficult labor following her risky pregnancy. The doctors attempted to induce labor on August 5, but it failed to work. They finally decided that a Cesarean section would be the best option.

As Meldrum was having the surgery, the doctors reported that her baby had a 'true knot' in her umbilical cord, something that is rare and can be dangerous.

A true knot occurs in only about one in every 2,000 pregnancies. It happens when a baby moves through a loop in the cord while still in the uterus. If tightened, there can be severe health consequences.

"The umbilical cord carries oxygen and nutrients from the placenta into the baby’s bloodstream," said Dr. Patrick O'Brien, spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, to the Daily Mail. "If the umbilical cord becomes tightly knotted, there will be a reduction in the flow of blood, depriving the baby of oxygen which can lead to permanent brain injury. A problem with the umbilical cord could also cause the baby to be stillborn."

"Usually the knot is discovered after the birth of a healthy baby," the doctor added.

Baby Poppy was born and needed to stay in the NICU for a while. She was born underweight and had trouble with her breathing. Thankfully, however, she's expected to be fine.

"I can honestly say I have never ever been through emotions like I have been through these last few days & I'm sure will continue to go through until we are all home together," said the emotional new mother.

"I've cried in a way I've never heard myself cry before, loud, ugly & almost primal need for my baby to be with me," Meldrum continued, noting how hard it was to go home without her baby in her arms. "I've stared into space for hours upon end wishing I was pregnant still, I've gone through every hospital appointment, scan & meeting from the last 6 months trying to work out how this could have ended up differently."

There is nothing that could have really been done, though. True knots are inevitable, and there is little to be done about them until the baby is born. Thankfully, little Poppy isn't experiencing any lasting consequences.

"I don't think anything could ever prepare you for not being with your baby after labor & delivery, but today I feel like I've turned a corner," Meldrum said once she had her baby back in her arms. "I'm sure it's the tonic of skin to skin with Poppy but I'm feeling more confident, more ready to face NICU & want to get involved in anyway I can with caring for my baby."
