Donations Pour In For Gas Station Employee - Fired Because She Defended Herself Against Robber

A mother of three from Albuquerque, New Mexico, has lost her job at a local Circle K gas station because she fought back against armed robbers. When a robber approached Jennifer Wertz at the gas station counter, the courageous mother ended up shooting the man when he threatened her with his weapon. After being fired, a GoFundMe page has racked up tens of thousands of dollars in donations.

The violent incident began while Ms. Wertz was working behind the counter. Ms. Wertz’s shift was disrupted when a man, 23-year-old Ferron Mendez, entered the gas station and immediately pointed a gun at her temple.

“He pointed the gun at my face, I grabbed my gun from my pocket, I cocked it and I shot,” declared Ms. Wertz during an interview with Fox News. However, when Circle K management heard about the incident, they suspended the brave employee for two weeks. After this period of deliberation, Ms. Wertz found out that she had been let go because the Circle K employee policy does not allow the carrying of firearms during work hours.

When Ms. Wertz’s mother learned what happened, she took it upon herself to organize a GoFundMe page because she knew her daughter was too independent to ask for help. Ms. Wertz’s story began going viral and, at the time of writing, $71,000 has been raised out of a campaign goal of $20,000.

“My daughter has 3 kids to care for and needs help now. The kids are 8, 6, and 2 and with no income she isn’t sure what to do. She won’t ask for help herself so I’m doing this for her. She is torn apart emotionally and is in need of time to recover from this ordeal,” wrote Ms. Wertz’s mother. “She has always been a good person, mom, and daughter. She is in need of dire help to support her family. She was already living pay check to pay check and now has no savings or nothing to fall back on. Please help as much as you can to support her and her family until she can find a new job.”

Ms. Wertz talked about her dismissal on Fox News, emphasizing that she was only bringing her gun to work because she had noticed a spate of crimes, particularly business robberies, in the area. “Robberies have been going on like this for the past few weeks,” said Ms. Wertz. “They [Circle K] have done nothing to protect me... and I felt the need to protect myself.”

Ms. Wertz also expressed her frustration at the company’s rigid policy for robberies. “What if he would have come in and just shot me just because I wasn't behind the counter?” she said. “I'm sick and tired of being a sitting duck.”

The robber, Mendez, has been detained after he was released from the hospital. He is facing a slew of charges and is already being connected with other local crimes. Ms. Wertz has not been charged or detained for her role in the robbery.
