Everyone Walks By Homeless Man Without Noticing Him, Except For This Little Girl

There is so much pain and suffering in the world that many adults have learned to turn a blind eye to it. It's not necessarily that people are hateful or don't care about those in need, it's just that it can be overwhelming and ignoring it is like a defense mechanism. It doesn't take much to ease someone's pain, though, and all it takes is a reminder.

One 6-year-old girl gave that reminder to her mother and other passers-by on a street in Norfolk, Virginia. Adorable little Janiyah Lewis was out for a pleasant day with her mother. The two did some shopping, and had just gotten a refreshing drink. That's when Janiyah noticed something wrong with a man sitting on the side of the street, crying.

"After leaving out of the store today my daughter did something that really made me stop and think," Janiyah's mother, Kenyatta Lewis, wrote on Facebook. "...she walked over to him and goes 'hi sir be happy it's a nice day it's not raining. Are you hot? Why don't you go home the ground is dirty?'"

The man explained to the little girl that he didn't have a home to go to. He told her that he would be okay, though.

Kenyatta says Janiyah looked at the man 'with the saddest face' and said to him, "So that means you're homeless. So you have no food because you have no refrigerator."

Janiyah didn't hesitate to open her little purse and pull out a few dollars. "Please go eat. It would make me happy. I like McDonald's you should go there."

She also gave the homeless man the remainder of her drink. Kenyatta was shocked and touched by her daughter's actions.

Apparently, so were other people. Janiyah’s actions were a potent reminder that the world is a far better place for everyone if humans treat each other with dignity, kindness and compassion. Two other people came up and gave the man some money out of their pockets. The little girl totally made the man's day, the mother said, and she snapped a picture of him holding hands with her daughter.

Kenyatta, Janiyah and the man started talking and the man said he was only recently homeless. He had lived in a trailer with his wife, but it burned down. He lost everything, including his wife. The mother's heart went out to him, and she couldn't have been prouder of her daughter for showing some compassion to the man.

“A six-year-old led by example this morning. AWESOME!" she concluded in her Facebook post. "Kids see no color and that's exactly how it should be. It's not just a statement saying that the children are our future, it's a FACT. That gives me a little more hope for the world.”

This man’s problems may not have all been solved, but at least for one day he got a cold drink, a hot meal, and some friendly support. All it took was a small child to get the ball rolling.
