Family Finally Gets Their Son Back After Real Life Case Of Babies Switched At Birth

A mother and father are delighted to finally have their infant son in their arms after four months of fighting for him. The man and his wife took a doctor to court when they say that he gave them the wrong baby in the hospital.

The doctor denied any wrongdoing, but a DNA test proved the babies had been switched. They're finally with their rightful families.

Richard Cushworth, a British man, and his wife Mercedes Casanella, from El Salvador, had given birth to a newborn son in Casanella's homeland. The happy parents were overjoyed when their baby was first placed in their arms, and they noted he had a lighter complexion like his father.

Later, the hospital brought the baby back to the parents, but the child looked darker than before.

The parents suspected they were given the wrong baby, but the hospital staff told them that a newborn's skin darkening after birth is natural.

Cushworth and Casanella repeatedly complained to the hospital staff that something was wrong; they believed they were given the wrong baby. They even feared that their own baby might have been the victim of kidnapping or trafficking, but the doctors repeatedly brushed off their concerns.

"It's a horrible situation for me, for her (his wife) for my family, her family. A child is an experience you have for a lifetime... this is a life-long injury that's very, very deep, and it's horrible."

The parents got a DNA test performed and found they were right. The baby they brought home did not match their DNA. They reported the issue and the hospital was ordered to conduct DNA tests on four babies that were born on that day, as well as their parents.

Two babies in the hospital were correct matches to the parents they went home with, but the other two were found to have been switched. The gynecologist who delivered the babies refused to admit that anything could have gone wrong, though.

After four months of fighting, a judge ordered the two babies be returned to their rightful families.

"In this case, we never had to use a sword," said Cushworth and Casanella's attorney. "We utilized the strength of truth, justice and all of our capacity to clarify this dramatic and unique situation in the history of our country."

Cushworth and Casanella finally got their baby back. They were thrilled.

"There are no words to express what our heart feels to have our baby at home!" the couple said in a statement to their supporters. "Thanks to all who joined our pain and fed our hope."

Charges have been filed against Dr. Alejandro Guidos, and he's been told he can't leave town. He maintains his innocence and is facing a trial.

The family of the other baby does not wish to come forward or be named publicly, but they are apparently happy to have the right baby back as well.
