Mom Baffled By Teacher's Note Saying Raisins Are Not A Healthy Snack For Daughter In School

A mom sent her daughter off to school with what she thought was a healthy snack. She was shocked, however, when she got a note back chastising her for her choice. She doesn't understand when raisins became unhealthy, and a lot of parents are with her.

While everyone agrees that children need to be taught to make healthy choices, not everyone agrees with what those healthy choices should be. A mom from Australia shared a note she got from her daughter's teacher to Facebook. The note shamed the mom for the snack she gave her child for school.

"Please help us to encourage nutritious eating habits in children. Our healthy eating policy asks you to provide healthy and nutritious snacks for your child to eat at kindy," the note read. The teacher added that the snack's sugar content was too high.

The mom was stunned. She'd given her daughter golden raisins. She asked other parents, and they were equally as baffled.

"This must be a joke? Of course they are high in sugar, they are fruit," the mother wrote on Facebook with a photo of the note.

"Today's lunch consisted of a sandwich roll, two boiled eggs, an orange, kiwi fruit, and a handful of sultanas [golden raisins]. She never has packaged food in her lunchbox or anything with refined sugar," the mom said.

Another mom, who happens to also be a dietitian, chimed in on the teacher's note. She's a little sick of moms and dads getting shamed by teachers for perfectly reasonable choices.

"If your child enjoys sultanas and feels happy when eating them, then that is a great choice for them. If you are a busy working household and grabbing a box of sultanas for the lunchbox makes it a bit easier for you, then it is a great choice for you," wrote Kathryn Hawkins in a Facebook response. "You DO NOT have to feel one bit guilty for putting a box of sultanas in your child's lunch and you DO NOT have to 'explain' why."

Another registered dietitian mom, Marisa Sweeny, says that a serving of raisins contains the approximate same amount of sugar as a serving of many fresh fruits. “Are they now going to take fresh fruit away from kids? It seems a little extreme,” she said.

Sweeny notes that though fruit may have sugar, it's not 'wasted calories'. They also pack a lot of nutrition. Raisins have potassium, iron and magnesium.

"A box of raisins is a lot less egregious than a box of cookies, and the sugar in it is natural fruit sugar," she said. "A box of raisins alongside a balanced lunch is totally in the clear. There are much bigger fish to fry."

Cheree Lawrence, a Facebook mommy blogger, says schools are making it increasingly more difficult for parents to pack a lunch box. “It’s getting out of hand and us as parents have limited lunchbox choices for fussy kids,” she said.

Teachers may mean well, but most are not qualified dietitians. They’re also not looking at what the child is eating on the whole for a day or a week in context. While encouraging sensible choices is a good idea, the method by which they’re judging what is in a child’s lunchbox is not very sensible.
