Mom Shamed Over Creative Smash Cake She Designed For Her Son

Australian blogger Mia Freedman had heard good things about new, colorful “smash” cakes on Instagram. A smash cake is apparently much like a piñata.

The “cakes” are really just structures made with candy, and when the birthday boy or girl hits the cake with a rolling pin or similar tool, then the other kids rush to grab the treats that pour out.

When Freedman shared a video of the birthday party with the smash cake on Facebook, most of the comments were not complimentary.

Some accused Freedman of being a poor mom for not making a cake from scratch and even argued the smash birthday cake was “violent.”

Freedman noted: “So the day of the party came and the cake came out and it was a big hit — literally — and the kids went nuts and today I posted a video on my Facebook page. They did not like the concept of it — hitting encourages violence.”

The commenters did not hold back in their criticisms. “Horrible, horrible. Violent attack on cake,” one commenter stated. “No wonder kids think manners are of no importance.”

“Whoa. Kids hitting each other… What an unfunny, horrible replacement for traditional cakes,” said another commenter.

While there were a few posts in support of Freedman, there were many more from those who didn’t approve of smash cakes for kids.
