Mom Shocked At The Reason Behind Her Young Son's Knee Pain: It Was Alive

What four-year-old doesn't love running around in the summer having fun at the beach? One child was having the time of his life, and like most kids his age, he managed to get a few scrapes and bruises while having his summer fun.

At the time, his mother didn't think anything about it, until he began complaining of constant knee pain. The mother took a look and couldn't believe what she pulled out of his knee: a snail.

Paul Franklin, a 4-year-old from Aliso Viejo, California, remembers hurting his knee while he was playing on a beach trip. He hit it on a rock as he was walking, but it was just a little ding and scrape, so he ignored it.

"We just cleaned it up, put a Band-Aid on it," said Ken Franklin, the boy's father, to KCAL. "Before you know it, a couple weeks later, his knee was very swollen and somewhat infected."

Paul's mom, Rachel, brought her son to the doctor and he was diagnosed with a staph infection. He was given antibiotics and sent home.

The antibiotics helped a little, but the problem wasn't solved. A black bump seemed to be growing under Paul's skin.

The mother became worried, but she was tired of doctors telling her it was nothing. She decided to drain the wound herself, so she squeezed the small bump with her fingers.

When she did, she was surprised to see that a tiny object popped out.

"It looked like a rock. It was a black thing," she told the station.

"I put it on a paper towel and I'm like, 'That is a weird looking rock. It has swirls on it,' and I turn it over and it is a sea snail."

"It's a freaking snail," Rachel laughed on Animal Planet's 'Monster Inside Me'.

The family believes that when Paul scuffed his knee on the rock, a snail egg became embedded in it. The snail had continued to grow inside the boy's knee.

Experts say that sea snails can survive in a wide range of environments with varying levels of salinity, and apparently the human body is one of those environments in which a baby snail can thrive.

“The subcutaneous tissue of the human body mirrors the harsh conditions where sea snails usually survive,” explains biologist Dan Riskin on the show.

Paul was surprised to find he had a little stow-away in his knee. "I thought it was kind of crazy," he said.

However, he wasn't upset with the snail. His mom said that Paul believes it's kind of cool that he had a snail in his knee.

In fact, the preschooler decided to adopt the little guy as a pet. He named it 'Turbo'.

Turbo is the titular character in an animated feature. The little snail, voiced by actor Ryan Reynolds, dreams of winning the Indy 500.

For many others, the idea that a living creature, particularly a squirmy one like a snail, might be living under their skin is a nightmare. If you thought the film ‘Jaws’ was enough to keep people off the beaches in the 1970’s, then you probably don’t want to watch the ‘Monster Inside Me’ episode where Paul shares his story.
