Mom Tries To Explain To Cops Why Child Was In Pool On Roof Of Her Car

You have to have a permit or license to do just about everything these days. You have to have one to get married, to drive, to go fishing or canoeing down a river. Unfortunately, you don't need one to become a parent, and that might be a terrible oversight. It's too bad that authorities have to wait for a parent to make a stupid move before they can do anything.

One mom got caught by police driving a minivan on the road in Fredonia, Wisconsin. On top of her minivan was a plastic wading pool. Inside the pool, on the roof of the car, was her 9-year-old son.

Authorities were called to the scene when someone reported the mom for having a child on the roof of a moving minivan. Cops quickly found the woman and pulled her over. They told her to take the child off the roof of the car immediately, then demanded an explanation.

Amber Schmunk, a 28-year-old mother, told the officers that she had picked up the plastic pool from one home and was dropping it off at her sister's house, according to WTMJ TV. She insisted that she had only been on the road for maybe 20 or 30 seconds.

Schmunk said she couldn't fit the pool inside the minivan, so she had to put it on top of the roof. She then realized she had no way to strap it down securely, so she had the child climb onto the roof and hold it down while she drove.

Schmunk said she thought it would be 'OK' because she tied her son down on top of the vehicle with the pool. She felt he was secure, and she notes that when she was his age, her dad let her do things like that all the time.

Police said the child was unharmed but noted that it wasn’t a good idea. The mom was arrested and charged with second-degree recklessly endangering safety. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison, and five additional years of supervision.

Surprisingly, Schmunk isn't the first parent who thought of strapping her kids on the outside of the car for a ride. One couple in Indiana were arrested after strapping their four kids to the hood of the car.

A bystander witnessed the kids strapped to the car outside of a liquor store. The person was reporting it when a parent came out of the store, got back into the car, and drove away with the kids, ages four to seven years old, still on the hood.

Police managed to track the family down. When questioning them, the dad admitted the kids came up with it and he did it because it sounded like fun. Needless to say, the dad was arrested. He was also found to be driving under the influence, making matters even worse.
