Mother Breaks Down In Tears After Meeting Teaching Assistant

Two strangers met in a very unique and emotional situation, and their story is inspiring others.

Losing a loved one in a sudden accident is a tragedy. It's particularly difficult when that loved one is your child. One woman's son died in 2006 after a car crash, but a part of him got to live on in a complete stranger. The mother recently was able to meet with the recipient of that precious gift.

Matthew Boylen was 22 years old and full of life, with a bright future ahead of him. Sadly, that future was taken away when he was in a terrible car accident. He lost his life, but his decision to be an organ donor resulted in him saving the life of another.

Lucy Boenitz, a complete stranger, was suffering from heart failure 11 years ago. Just as she was preparing to meet her end, Boylen had his tragic accident. Boenitz was the recipient of Boylen's heart on August 17, 2006, and that transplant changed her life.

Since the transplant, Boenitz moved on with her life, a life for which she was very grateful. She has always greatly appreciated what Matthew did. "Matthew means gift from God. I believe in so many ways he was," she said.

Recently, Boenitz and Matthew's family got to meet. It was a highly emotional reunion, and the encounter was caught on video. "I remember being so thankful to be alive."

Donna Harper, Boylen's mother, stood face to face with Boenitz. The two women were in tears and overwhelmed by the meeting. Boenitz offered to let Harper listen to her son's still-beating heart with a stethoscope.

"Do you want to hear his heart? It's probably going to be going a million miles an hour," she said.

As she listened, the two embraced. "It's strong and it's healthy and it's love," Harper said.

Kelsey Pearson, Boylen's daughter, was also there for the meeting. She was only a toddler when her father died, but the 12-year-old got to hear his heart as well.

"Take all the time you need," Boenitz told the young girl. "He's still right here."

Kelsey's mother Maggie Pearson, who was Boylen's long-time girlfriend when he died, as well as his two sisters, Mindy Callihan and Jamie Harriman, also came to meet the woman living with their loved one's heart. The family showed the heart recipient photos of Boylen and told her about his life. Though they miss Matthew dreadfully, they are glad that a part of him gets to live on, and that his senseless death was able to mean life for another human being.

"He would have wanted his heart to go to someone who loved their family, who made a difference in the world," said Harriman. "That's why we've been able to come to terms. We're all organ donors now."

"When I tell people about Matthew, I’m just so proud of him and he isn’t my child," Boenitz said. "Had he not even given me a heart, I’m just so proud of him. He was doing all the right things."
