Photographer Shocked When Client Cancels Appointment After Finding Out She's A Lesbian

One Alabama photographer booked a photo shoot with a pregnant woman for a maternity shot. The woman, after booking the shoot, did some digging on the photographer's Instagram page and discovered a rainbow flag. She contacted the photographer to find out her sexual orientation. The woman then promptly cancelled the shoot because she didn't want her kids 'to be influenced by people like you'.

Faith Grace, a 21-year-old photographer, posted a text conversation she had with an unnamed client. She said the exchange 'breaks her heart'. The client didn't want Grace to shoot her picture because Grace is a lesbian.

A day after the woman booked the appointment, she got in touch with Grace. "Hi Faith!" she wrote. "This is McKenna from last night. I was reaching out to you about maternity photos! I went through your personal Instagram account to get your photography business account and on your personal pad I saw that you had a pride flag. Are you gay or do you have family that's gay?"

"Hey McKenna!" Grace replied. "Thanks for reaching out. Nobody in my fam is gay but I am - that's why I have it on my account."

The pregnant woman had a shocking response. "I see, OK well don't worry about the photos then. I don't want someone who's gay to take my pictures. It's just not right," she wrote. I'm against it and the last thing I need is to allow my 5-year-old child to think that being gay is OK/right because I don't want them to be influenced by people like you. I'm sorry that you think that this lifestyle is OK and acceptable. Take care, Faith."

The response demonstrated a type of bigotry that outraged many Twitter users. Grace asked her followers to "[Retweet] & share this to show people that hatred & discrimination still exists & it NEEDS to stop."

This kind of discrimination is currently front and center, with the Supreme Court hearing a case about a Christian baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. Right now, the SCOTUS seems to be split on the issue.

While conservatives insist that forcing a baker to make a cake that he doesn't want to make violates his freedom of speech, others warn that giving businesses the right to turn away LGBT people would open the door to more discrimination. This ruling could be used to justify discrimination against any marginalized group.

What happened to Grace is the reverse; she was willing to provide a creative service, but her client was unwilling to work with her. People running a business can’t really force a person to use their service; the customer is certainly allowed to turn down doing business with any service provider for any reason they may seem fit. It’s just unfortunate that people in this day and age can lose business because of who they are and what they do in their private lives.
