Pregnant Mom Vanishes - What Officers Found In Neighbor's Home Leaves Them Shocked

A bizarre mystery began to unfold when a woman disappeared seemingly without a trace in her own apartment building. Her concerned family and community began massive search efforts to bring the woman, who was eight months pregnant, home safe. In a very strange twist, the baby was found days after the mother's disappearance. Police say the search has now come to a tragic end for the new mother.

Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, a 20-year-old mother-to-be, was living in an apartment complex with her parents in Fargo, North Dakota. The heavily pregnant woman told her mother she was going to visit a neighbor upstairs to try on a dress that the woman, Brooke Crews, was sewing.

Later, the pregnant woman's father, Joe Greywind, went up to ask for his daughter. Crews told him that Greywind would be down soon. Later, when Greywind failed to return home, her mother, Norberta LaFontaine-Greywind, went up looking for her. Crews told her that Savanna left hours ago.

No one could find a trace of Greywind after that. Her family called police and the community rallied together to start searching. Police initially had several different theories about Greywind's disappearance, but mainly thought it was a case of 'newborn kidnapping'. While rare, in such cases, someone takes the newborn child from a pregnant woman either to pretend it is their own, or to sell the baby. Authorities considered that someone was holding the pregnant mother against her will, or that they were seeking to induce labor or remove her unborn baby.

No one could find Greywind, but a week after she went missing, a startling discovery was made. Crews, 38, who lived with 32-year-old William Hoehn, were found with a two-day-old infant in their apartment. That apartment was the last place that Greywind was known to be.

Police arrested Crews and Hoehn, and a DNA test has been performed on the newborn baby to see if it belonged to Greywind. Authorities say it’s a very odd case.

“There’s a clear pattern in women who do this,” said newborn kidnapping expert John Rabun. “They are women who need to cement a relationship with a male significant other. She has a need to have a male bonded to her and she'll do whatever she has to do.”

The cases in which the newborn is stolen by a woman to be raised as her baby usually don’t involve the man. The partners of the deceitful female kidnappers are usually kept in the dark about the crime.

After being missing for a week, Greywind’s body was found in a river. She had been wrapped in plastic and hung over a log. Kayakers accidentally stumbled upon the body.

Police are searching a nearby farm, which they believe to be the scene of a crime involving Greywind. Authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy as well.

Recent reports say Hoehn was convicted of child abuse in 2012.
