She Gets This Letter From Her Landlord Because Her Son Was Playing

A young, single mother in the U.K. was shocked when she got a threatening letter from the landlord. Neighbors had apparently complained about her 2-year-old son's noise level. Faced with the threat of legal troubles.

Sapphire Curzon says her 2-year-old son, Callum, is no different than any other toddler. He likes to play. He plays with his toys in the bedroom, smashing his cars and trucks. He runs around a bit. She thought it was normal, then a threatening letter came.

The landlord said the next-door neighbors and the downstairs neighbors complained about Callum. He wrote her a notice threatening an Anti-Social Behavior Order (ASBO), a minor court order that results in punishments for non-criminal incidents.

Curzon was shocked. She says other people in the complex make noise, but Callum is the only one getting blamed and she is the only one being threatened. She feels bad that she now has to jump on her toddler and scold him whenever he's getting excited.

“All my son does is run around and play with cars, trucks and building blocks. I find myself now constantly telling him off. But I shouldn’t tell him off because he’s playing. It’s just what a child does," she explains to SWNS.

“Whatever noise my son makes I feel like I have to scold him straight away. I’ve [sic] essentially having to stop him from having any fun,” she added.

The mother is terrified of getting an ASBO and going to court, so she's trying hard to comply. Still, she feels the landlord and neighbors are a little unreasonable; Callum is a small child, after all.

Maybe Curzon needs to teach Callum indoor versus outdoor appropriate noises, or possibly she should take him out more during the day to burn off some of that energy. Kids shouldn’t have to be scolded for playing, but they do need to learn appropriate boundaries and behavior for different environments.
