Teen Finds Veteran's Wallet With $2,300 In Cash, Quickly Returns It (Photos)

A broke Irvington High senior from a financially struggling family was on his way to get a soda for lunch at a 7-11 for himself and his brother. The teen couldn't afford to buy lunch in the school cafeteria.

On his way, he stumbled upon a large sum of money in a wallet he found on the ground near the 7-11. It never even occurred to him to keep it, though.

Tommy O’Connor of Fremont, California learned the wallet contained $2,300 in cash.

He hadn't realized how much it was, though, when he picked it up. He was too busy running back to the school to get help returning it.

“I didn’t count it when I saw it. I just thought it was probably someone’s rent or something,” Tommy told KPIX-TV.

Tommy gave the wallet to a teacher's aide and asked for help finding its owner. They found him-- a veteran. The wallet, and money, was returned to the man.

Ron O’Connor, Tommy’s dad tells KPIX “With us living month-to-month, it is a big chunk of money and I’m so proud of him that he did that."

Sherry, Tommy's mother, got word from the school about what her son did. She immediately texted her young man to let him know what a good thing he did.

"I'm very proud of you son," she texted. "Wow your [sic] one in a million. Love you to the moon and back."

Tommy did another kind deed that day by paying his mom a compliment. "You should be thanking yourself you raised me."

Tommy ended up getting a $50 reward for his honesty, but he didn't do it for any kind of reward. “I’m just doing something I wish everyone else would do,” said the teen.
