Yet Another Airline Removes Passengers, This Time Over Conflict With Birthday Cake

One New Jersey family was excited about their upcoming trip to Las Vegas. To make the event even more special, they were slated to take off on the mother's birthday. The young sons kissed their mom on the cheek as she sported her birthday crown at the airport. The family had no idea about how badly things were about to go as an overzealous airline crew threw them off the plane because they brought birthday cake.

The Burke family boarded the JetBlue plane with a cake to celebrate mom Minta's 40th birthday. It turned out to be a birthday to remember, but for all the wrong reasons. It all started when the family put the cake box in an overhead compartment.

According to the TSA, it's okay to bring baked cakes and pies on a plane as long as you allow agents to inspect it at the security checkpoint. The Burke family were waved through without a problem. But once the mom put the cake in the compartment, a crew member came over to ask her to move it.

“A flight attendant nicely asked me to remove the cake from that compartment, so I moved it to another one. She then asked me to move it to underneath the seat in front of me, I did,” said Cameron, the husband and father.

He explained that another crew member became upset about the cake. “You know, you could see the gestures — then she was pointing to her, did you tell him he couldn't put anything in the overhead compartment? I had approached them, and I said everything was fine, and she said, 'Sir, this does not involve you. When she told me I had been non-compliant, then I said 'ma'am, had you been drinking?' because her behavior was not normal.”

That comment set off the crew member. Before the family knew it, the police were called. The children cried as police took down a report and told the family that the airline was booting them from the flight. They were issued a refund and left stranded at the airport.

“We were just so happy. Couldn't wait to get to Las Vegas, and all of a sudden this occurred, and my two children are screaming, crying. They're confused not knowing what's going on — they were traumatized,” said Minta to ABC 7 News.

A spokesperson for JetBlue said, “(The customer) refused multiple requests from the crew to remove the items, became agitated, cursed and yelled at the crew, and made false accusations about a crew member's fitness to fly.”

A video, however, shows a different scene. Not only were the family being very polite and compliant, but even the police told them they did nothing wrong. The officer said they were going to try and talk with the airline, but apparently the cops couldn't persuade the crew members to give the family a break.

The family filed a lawsuit against JetBlue. “I want the flight attendant fired, she has no business serving the public. I hope JetBlue will retrain their staff and recreate the culture I once loved.”
