Young Widow Takes Trip With Kids To Visit Husband's Gravesite At Arlington National Cemetery

Kait Brazel knew she had to make the cross-country trip to visit her family in Boston, but her emotions were churning just thinking about it. It wasn’t her final destination that had her feeling so emotional; it was the stop before she and her boys ended up in Boston to meet her folks that had her worried.

So the Monday before Thanksgiving, Kait got her two young boys into the car and they undertook a 1,600-mile drive from Colorado Springs, Colorado, to a special location in northern Virginia. The family had a very important stop before they arrived for the Thanksgiving festivities in Boston started.

When Kait pulled up to Arlington National Cemetery, she felt her stomach tighten. The reason she had come here was so her sons, five-year-old Mylan and eight-year-old Mason, could visit their father’s gravesite for the first time.

You see, earlier in the year, Army Staff Sgt. Alfred “Fred” Brazel came down with advanced stage 4 rectal cancer. Unfortunately, despite aggressive treatment, the loving dad of two boys passed away just five months later at the age of 37.

Fred and Kait made the decision early on that they were not going to shield their young sons from the medical drama involved in treating Fred’s difficult condition. This meant that Mylan and Mason were with Mom and Dad throughout their dad’s struggle with the disease, going to doctor’s appointments and everything. The parents said that they spoke openly and frankly to their boys regarding what the diagnosis meant to their family, and the possibility of their dad dying.

When the two brothers finally arrived at Arlington National Cemetery, they lay down on Fred’s grave and talked to their dad about everything going on in their lives in recent months. They told him what costumes they wore on Halloween, how much candy they got, and how they were doing at school.

Before it was time to leave and head off to meet family in Bean Town, there was even time for a short nap: “Mylan said he felt like he could feel his daddy, and he wanted to take a nap with him.”

In a touching farewell gesture, Mylan hugged his dad’s headstone, and Kait managed to capture the amazingly poignant moment on camera.

When they left the Arlington National Cemetery, the family continued on to Boston to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. It should be noted that the Brazels made a pit stop at Niagara Falls on their way back home to Colorado, a special place that Fred had planned to visit with his sons in the future.

The long road trip this Thanksgiving reflected how the family lived while Fred was still alive, and also how they will continue on in the future. “We never once addressed it as a sad thing… We as a family lived and continue to live life to the fullest in every moment,” Kait explains as she flashes a brave smile.
