911 Dispatcher Horrified When Man Reveals Why He Killed His Wife

A man gave a shocking reason for killing his wife, and it's causing a good deal of debate.

A North Carolina man is either the most unfortunate cold sufferer in history, or a calculated killer with a likely story. The man called 911 to report his wife's death to the police. He says he thought he was dreaming that he was killing her after taking too much cold medicine.

Matthew Phelps, a 28-year-old young husband from Raleigh, called the 911 operator to report that his wife was dead. On Thursday night, Phelps said he took cold medicine to help him sleep, and then had dreams that he killed his wife.

When Phelps woke up, he says he found his wife dead, blood on the floor and a knife in his hand. He claims he didn't know what he was doing because he was under the influence of the over-the-counter cold medicine. “I took Coricidin Cough and Cold because I know it can make you feel good. A lot of times I can’t sleep at night. So, I took some,” he said.

"I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she's dead on the floor," he told the dispatcher. "I have blood all over me and there's a bloody knife on the bed... I think I did it."

"I can't believe this," Phelps added.

Neither can authorities. Police are questioning the story about too much cold medicine. Phelps says he may have overdosed. "I took more medicine than I should have." He said, claiming it would help him sleep some nights.

Phelps, who had hoped to become a pastor, sounded distraught when he talked to the dispatcher. The chilling 911 call conversation is either an award-worthy performance by a cold-blooded killer or the heartbreaking cry of a grieving husband and tragedy victim.

The dispatcher asked him to go closer to his wife's body to check to see if she was breathing, but he refused. "I don't know. I'm too scared to get too close to her. ... I'm so scared."

Phelps then began sobbing. "She didn't deserve this," he cried.

Lauren Phelps, Matthew's 29-year-old wife, was discovered with multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

The couple had only been married a year.

Bayer, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the cold medicine that Phelps took, put out a statement extending their 'deepest sympathies' to the family.

"Patient safety is our top priority, and we continually monitor adverse events regarding all of our products," Bayer said. "There is no evidence to suggest that Coricidin is associated with violent behavior."

Phelps has been charged with murder and is currently being held without bond. An investigation into the death is ongoing. He has a court appearance slated for Tuesday.

Friends and family are in complete shock over Lauren's sudden demise. Friends set up a fundraiser for the family.

“I am in disbelief. She was one of the purest souls one could ever meet,” one person wrote. “Her kind heart and sweet nature are an extremely rare find. She was a great friend to anyone lucky enough to call her one.”
