Barron Trump Gets What No Other Child Has Ever Gotten In White House

While it's been made abundantly clear that the Trump presidency aims to break free of most norms, some aspects are still at least mildly surprising.

It's not uncommon for the President or even a First Lady to have their painted portrait hung up in the White House. So far, though, no children of any president have had that honor. According to reports, Barron Trump may be the first one.

Artist Barry Wingard painted a collection of portraits of the Trump family and wanted to present them as a gift to Mr. and Mrs. Trump. According to TMZ, the artist reached out to Congressman Mike Kelly about the unofficial portraits, and they're currently on their way to their new home on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Kelly says it's unusual for non-official portraits to be hung for display in the White House, but he was moved by the beauty and the quality of Wingard's oil paintings. The Secret Service will have to examine the portraits before they are brought into the house, but barring any surveillance equipment or explosive devices planted inside, the staff is already making arrangements to hang them.

One portrait is of Melania Trump at her husband's inauguration. The FLOTUS was painted in her powder blue suit that made headlines and helped her get compared to former FLOTUS Jackie O.

Another portrait is of President Trump in his extra-long red tie, sitting at his desk signing his first official executive orders.

The third and final portrait is the one that's generating the most excitement. It features President Trump and his youngest son, Barron, hugging on the stage of the Republican National Convention in July of 2016. At the time, Barron was just 10 years old.

Thus far, no former president’s child landed in a White House portrait. Barron would be a pioneer in this situation, if the portrait is kept on official display. It isn't clear yet in which rooms the portraits are planning to be put on display, but several rooms underwent renovations over the summer. This may have freed up some wall space for new artwork. The portraits might also end up being something the Trump family keeps for themselves in their private residence, and will take with them when they move out.

According to Kelly, it’s up to the president where the portraits end up.

Barry Wingard is an artist and was a big Trump supporter during the election, not surprisingly. He’s also one of Kelly’s constituents, which is why he reached out to the congressman about his masterpieces. Kelly was delighted by the works of art and immediately asked the artist to have them framed and delivered.

"This is a person taking their talent and their time to show their appreciation," Kelly said, noting that the artist was very humble about his work.

Wingard is best known for featuring Christian religious scenes, stunning landscapes, animal and Native American-themed paintings. The Pennsylvania painter told BuzzFeed in a comment that he paid to use the images and painted the portraits because he believes the president 'deserves respect'.

“The lack of respect for the president has gone on a little too far," Wingard said, BuzzFeed reports.
