6-Year-Old Forced To Urinate On Herself After Teacher Mutters 2 Words

One little girl has been through a lot, and her parents are attempting to fight to make things easier.

A 6-year-old transgendered girl in rural North Carolina is being denied bathroom rights by her school. The battle for transgendered children's bathroom rights rages on in the conservative area, and sometimes the best solution that teachers can offer the first grader is 'hold it'.

Emma Smith, a transgendered student at Glen Arden Elementary School, was told by her teacher to hold it in when she said she had to go to the bathroom. Emma, unable to hold it, had an accident and wet her pants.

Emma's teacher escorted the child from one side of the school to the other so that she could be changed into dry clothes. Emma came home that day with a bag full of urine-soaked clothing, but pee had trickled down her legs all the way into her sneakers.

Emma's parents, Amy and Kevin Smith, are fighting for their daughter's rights, and her dignity. Emma may have been labeled a 'boy' at birth, but throughout her young life, her family realized that she identified as a girl.

They thought her preference for what are traditionally considered girl's toys, girl's clothing and girl's entertainment would eventually fade. They figured it was a phase. But it never went away.

“She always had girl tendencies,” said Mr. Smith to the Huffington Post.

"She’s always been petite, she’s always been sweet like a little girl. Before we ever realized, she was always wanting pink and girls’ toys, dolls. We didn’t really know what was going on with it, we just thought, ‘Pink, blue, what makes a difference? We don’t care.’”

“She began calling me ‘he,’” said Mrs. Smith. "“We thought she was just really confused and we needed to explain to her the difference in gender. I said, ‘Let’s explain this: Boys’ pronouns are he and him. Girls’ are she and her.’ But Emma kept saying, ‘You’re he!’"

Emma identified with her mother's gender, and figured if everyone considered Emma male, that her mother must also be male.

"And then one day she said, 'Well, if I’m a boy, you’re a boy',” Amy says Emma told her, and that's when the lightbulb went off.

Emma was confused about pronouns, but only because everyone had been using the wrong one for her.

“It was gradual, it wasn’t all of a sudden. We kept letting her express herself the way she wanted to express herself,” Amy added.

Things were fine until Emma started school. She showed up that first day in August of 2016 wearing a white flowered dress, which she chose for herself.

Her parents thought teachers would be respectful of Emma's identity issue, but unfortunately, they were abruptly met with resistance.

The school wasn't equipped to deal with a transgendered student. They refused to call her 'Emma' or use female pronouns.

They wanted Emma to dress in boy's clothes, and told the parents they could 'order' her to dress like a boy. The bathroom became a particular problem.

"We have to follow HB 2," the Smiths say the principal told them. "And that states... she has to use the boys’ bathroom. And that’s all we can offer."

House Bill 2 was passed in 2016 in an attempt to block any counties from passing LGBTQ-friendly legislation. When former President Barack Obama granted bathroom rights to transgendered students across the nation, the Smiths thought the matter was settled.

Now that President Donald Trump has reversed that order, it's up in the air again.

As long as it takes politicians to sort things out, Emma will have to keep holding it.
