Coffee Shop Has Interesting Pricing Tier, And It's a Hit

A Roanoke, Virginia coffee shop owner wanted to remind people about a little thing called manners. The shop owner did so in a way that has really gotten attention. Photos of a sign outside the shop have gone viral, and people are applauding the shop for making the efforts.

The CUPS Coffee & Tea shop has a sandwich board outside the store that gives the prices. Instead of prices going by size, though, they're assigned by how politely the customer ordering the coffee is.

The sign reads "One small coffee" is "$5.00."

Below that, it reads "One small coffee, please" is "$3.00."

Finally, it says, "Hello, I'd like one small coffee please."

For that last one, you'll pay just $1.75.

Locals loved the store's gentle call for manners, charging more for those who don't say 'hello' or 'please'. The owner says it was just a joke at first, but now it's really caught on.

“I decided because I need to solve all the injustices of the world to start charging more for people who didn’t take the time to say ‘hello’ and connect and realize we’re all people behind the counter,” said owner Austin Simms.

He jotted the message down one Sunday, and by Monday it had made international news. By Wednesday, Simms says, people began showing up with cameras. It definitely gave a boost to business.

It only takes a moment to scroll the restaurant’s reviews on just about any social media platform to see that courtesy is a virtue in the business. Customers are always raving about how nice the staff treats them when they come in. If the sign got people going there, it’s the staff that gets them coming back.

Creative restaurant signs are a great way to get people's attention, apparently. Just browsing the internet will show you how a good sign can beckon you, making you want to try a place.

One restaurant during the 2008 election campaign got political. An Obama burger cost $8 and was served 'w/fries or salad'. A Romney burger, on the other hand, cost $20 and was served 'w/no rights for women'.

One restaurant's sign read, "Come in and try the worst meatball sandwich that one guy on Yelp ever had in his life."

Who wouldn't want to accept that challenge?

One restaurant employee was apparently charged with the task of coming up with something good. Some might say he succeeded, some might say he failed. His sign read, "Something witty and thought-provoking (that's what my boss told me to write on the chalkboard)."

The Tex-Mex restaurant El Arroyo in Austin, Texas has become famous for its never-ending stream of interesting and amusing signs. One holiday season, locals spotted a sign reading, "Wishing you a happy whatever doesn't offend you."

Later that year, the sign read, "Finally all my winter fat is gone, now I have spring rolls."

Some of the signs are a little more of the witty and thought-provoking variety (that other restaurant could take notes). One read, "I wonder what my dog named me?"

During the election year, the owner of the Arroyo got political as well. "The only clowns I'm afraid of are the ones running for pres," the sign read.
