Conservatives Furious Over Latest Announcement About Obama

Barack Obama might be out of the Oval Office, but he's certainly hanging around in a lot of people's minds.

The state of California recently passed legislation that would change the name of a stretch of freeway in Los Angeles. The road will go from a plain-old number name to a more prestigious option: it'll be named after the former first black president of the U.S. Since the resolution does not require a signature from the federal government, the movement will be pushed through.

The resolution was proposed by Democratic Senator Anthony Portantino. The Senator suggested the 134 Freeway that passes through Eagle Rock, a hipster section of Los Angeles, Glendale and Pasadena, be dubbed the Barack H. Obama Highway.

The Senator's reasoning is that President Obama frequently used that very stretch of road himself between 1979 and 1981 when he attended Occidental College, before he transferred to Columbia University in New York.

The Senator, a big Obama supporter, is excited about the legislation. "I am so proud to have authored this proposal to forever appreciate and commemorate President Obama's tremendous legacy, statesmanship and direct connection to Southern California," he said on his website.

The resolution had no trouble going through. It received bipartisan support, and was easily passed. The vote ironically took place on the same day that President Donald Trump began announcing his plans to phase out some of President Obama's key immigration policies.

It's not the first road in L.A. that will be named after the beloved former president. A portion of Rodeo Road was changed to Obama Boulevard earlier this year by the L.A. city council. This was the location of Mr. Obama's first presidential campaign rally.

Other states have already named roads after Obama as well. The state of Florida has five major roads named after him. Illinois, Indiana and Missouri have also named streets after the president. About a half-dozen streets have been proposed.

There is also a road in Tanzania named after Obama, and a mountain in Antigua and Barbuda. More than a dozen U.S. public schools have been named after Obama, with one that is named for both the former POTUS and FLOTUS: the Barack and Michelle Obama Service Learning Elementary school in St. Paul, Minnesota.

In addition, Obama has had several animals named after him, including a fish, a spider and a diving beetle. His name has also been lent to a species of fungi the 'Caloplaca obamae'.

In Ireland, a gas station with a food court and visitor's center between Dublin and Limerick has been renamed the Barack Obama Plaza. The location is at Moneygall, which was the birthplace of Obama's great-great-great-great grandfather.

In Kenya, where Obama's father was from, they have a holiday in honor of the president. Obama Day has been a national holiday in the country ever since he was elected U.S. president in 2008.

In Illinois, residents have named August 4 a state holiday that will begin in 2018. Obama was a member of the Illinois Senate from 1997 through 2004, and he was the United States Senator from Illinois from 2005 through 2008 before he became president. August 4 is the former president's birthday.
