Donald And Melania Trump: Body Language Doesn't Lie

President Donald Trump has been accused of offering 'alternative facts' on numerous occasions. To put it mildly, the statements have been given four-Pinocchio ratings by the Washington Post at an astonishing rate, and he's in the running for blowing the record out of the water. However, there's one thing that doesn't usually lie: body language. Some body language experts have pointed to Mr. Trump and First Lady Melania and say that despite the fact that they try to act happy, they're seriously in trouble.

Donald and Melania Trump have attempted to look like the model couple throughout the election and during Trump's presidency, but there are a few hints hidden in their body language that show things are probably not as they appear. One interesting thing that many experts have picked up on is the fact that the FLOTUS always seems to be trailing the POTUS by several paces.

Whenever the pair arrive somewhere, it seems that Mr. Trump goes on full-speed ahead, forgetting he has a wife. And considering that wife is usually overdressed, wearing stiletto heels and sunglasses (even at night), it's not that easy for her to scramble and catch up.

One photo taken recently shows Melania slowly and carefully making her way down the steps while disembarking Air Force One. Trump is already at the bottom of the steps, greeting people and posing for photo ops.

In contrast, photos of former presidents, such as Barack Obama and Ronald Regan, always shows the gentlemen walking with their wives down the steps.

“When a man and woman are coming down the stairs the man would go before her," said etiquette editor Jacqueline Whitmore to the HuffPost. "The logic being that if she trips or falls, the man (generally being larger or stronger) would be in a position to catch her.”

According to Whitmore, pictures of Trump going down so far ahead of his wife 'could be perceived as a sign of disrespect'.

Etiquette expert Elaine Swann agrees. “The proper thing for him to do is to wait for his spouse at the bottom of the stairs and then take her hand and assist her down the last few steps as she comes down. This was not done," she said. “He still is a husband first before a president. Because he’s in the presence of a woman, and this woman is his spouse, he still has to make sure that he’s nurturing his relationship. And part of nurturing your relationship is the small gestures and niceties that are necessary in terms of chivalry.”

One time when this behavior got a lot of notice was at the inauguration. The Trumps got out of the car to meet the Obamas at the steps of the White House, and Mr. Trump hurried out and rushed up the steps. Mrs. Trump was left behind to make the approach alone.

“When I look at the video [from the inauguration], this same thing rings true. President Trump should have never bounded up those steps, leaving his wife behind on the opposite side of the car,” Swann said. “The proper way to go up the stairs is the lady always goes first, and then the gentleman follows behind her – whether you are the President or not.”

Whitmore says manners count, and the president is not setting a very good example. "He’s a role model for the country, having said that –- he should be modeling, I believe, a different kind of behavior.”
