Elderly Man Is About To Get Scammed Out Of Boatload Of Cash - Then A Kind Walmart Employee Steps In

Scammers will do whatever they can to accomplish their ultimate goals, and little mind is paid to the consequences for victims along the way. As deplorable as that may be, it’s a cold hard reality of the world that we live in.

Scam artists are all over the place, and they employ sophisticated tactics to get their hands on others hard-earned dollars. Even more disturbingly, there’s a whole bunch of them that will prey on elderly people.

As WCPO shares, Cincinnati resident Cecil Rodgers was nearly one of the members of the growing list victims. He received a disturbing phone call that scared the daylights out of him, as the voice on the other end of the line was in need of help.

"A voice comes on and says, 'Papaw, this is your oldest grandson. I'm in trouble,'" Rodgers explains.

"He said, 'I hit a woman's car and she was seven months pregnant. And they charged me with drunken driving and I'm in jail.'"

From that point, a lawyer got on the phone to further explain that his grandson was in peril.

"I'm going to try to get him out so he can drive home," the lawyer said.

Rodgers was told that he needed to send a serious amount of cash right away so that his grandson could get off the hook. He didn’t think twice about that, and he quickly went down to the local Walmart to transfer the funds.

When he got there, he met a kind clerk named Audrella Taylor, and he explained the situation to her.

“He said something about somebody was locked up in jail, he got a call, and he needed to send $2,000," Taylor explained. "I said, 'I am going to refuse the sender.'"

"I'm not going to let you send that money. I think you are being scammed," she told him.

Taylor encouraged the man to contact his family to see if his daughter had been contacted.

"Because his daughter hadn't been contacted yet, I felt like if a son was in true need, the mom would have been contacted first before the grandpa would," she added.

Rodgers would contact his family. It turns out that Taylor was right on the money.

This was all a hoax aimed at getting the elderly man to send out a ton of cash without thinking twice about it. He’s forever grateful to Taylor, as parting ways with such a sum of money could’ve left him in a pickle.

"I don't have much," Rodgers said.

The touching story was picked up by the local media, and it spread like wildfire from that point. Taylor is rightfully receiving a ton of praise for stepping up to the plate, and it sounds like Walmart store manager Dominic Gross knows he has a real gem on his hands.

"We are very happy with Audrella and all our customer service associates who help in that manner," Gross said.

Gross also explained that the store has taken steps to train cashiers on red flags to look out for when it comes to transferring money and whatnot, and it sounds like that training is paying off tenfold. Preventing one scam at a time may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it can make a world of difference for folks like Rodgers.
