Experts Weigh In On Trump's Hand-Holding And Hand-Shaking - Something Seems Wrong

Couples hold hands all the time, and normally for a healthy, happy married couple, it seems like the most natural thing in the world. For some reason, though, when President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania hold hands, it looks completely unnatural. Trump's strange handshakes also look like something is very wrong with the president.

Some body language and etiquette experts have weighed in on what they think is going on.

This week, the FLOTUS posted a photo of herself and her husband visiting Pearl Harbor. The two stood before the moving memorial and appeared to be holding hands, except many people pointed out just how awkward that hand-holding looked.

The couple are shown from behind and at first it looked like a very sweet moment with the two of them standing hand in hand. Upon closer inspection, it looks more like Melania has her hand balled into a fist, and Trump is clasping it.

Prominent lifestyle expert Elaine Swann told Jezibel.com, "The reason [I think this] is because you can clearly see Melania’s fingers and you don’t see any separation in her fingers ― like his [fingers] in between hers. It looks like what he did is clasped his hand over hers,” she said.

“It does appear odd to me in this particular incident because they’re visiting this memorial here that is very moving in terms of the gravity of the lives that were lost during the Pearl Harbor attack,” Swann added.

“Normally, when you are connected to your mate, your spouse, your partner, you’d expect to see more of a connection between the two, because when you think about lives lost and then you have your life partner next to you, it does make you want to clasp that person a little tighter, hold them a little closer. For whatever reason, I don’t see that in this particular photo here.”

“It looks to me more like these are two people standing and posing for a photo opportunity. They’re obviously very cognizant of the fact that they’re being photographed,” reveals the expert.

It isn't the first time the Trumps looked very awkward holding hands, and the problem has been pointed out before. Sometimes they don't even bother keeping up a charade of closeness.

Many times Trump has simply walked ahead of his wife, leaving her to follow. Once on a trip to Tel Aviv, Trump tried to grab Melania's hand and she quickly refused, swatting him away. That's very telling.

Trump is always having problems with awkwardness when he locks hands with other people, though. Just look at his handshake, in which he seems to forcefully squeeze the other person's hand in a vice-like grip.

He then tends to tug and shove them with his hand until his handshakes look more like a game of tug-of-war than a friendly greeting.

Body language expert India Ford told Time Magazine that Trump appears to be trying to show who's boss with his handshakes.

"Trump tends to hold onto hands for far too long," said Ford in examining a handshake between Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron. "Again, it’s a very aggressive handshake – it’s like a knuckle-buster.

The whole point of shaking hands is to show respect so the way you do it does project a lot of your personality traits. A limp handshake may suggest someone who’s weak and, on the other end of the spectrum, a very aggressive handshake – which this one appears to be because the hand is really clutched around Macron, suggests someone who’s confrontational."
