First Lady Gets Some Really Bad News

While Melania Trump tends to endure a lighter load of criticism than others in the family, that doesn't mean that she never finds herself in hot water.

Some folks are sick and tired of First Lady Melania Trump spending so much time at Trump Tower in New York City, and they’re aiming to do something about it. So why would folks be so riled up about that? Probably because it costs taxpayers an arm and a leg.

As AOL shares, a petition is making the rounds to rectify the situation.

“The U.S. taxpayer is paying an exorbitant amount of money to protect the First Lady in Trump Tower, located in New York City. As to help relieve the national debt, this expense yields no positive results for the nation and should be cut from being funded,” the petition on Change.org reads.

Those that have gleefully added their names to it are hopping mad as well, and they unloaded in the comments section.

"If she chooses to live apart from her husband, the American Tax Payers should NOT pick-up the tab!" said one signer. "They can afford to pay for the extravagance of living apart. The Tax Payers have provided a perfectly acceptable home which has met the needs of every other previous president."

“Living in the White House is what you do when you are married to the president,” added another signer. “The tax money saved by eliminating these extra protection expenses can be used to feed junior citizens. Why is our tax money being spent on people who already have more than their fair share?”

“Every First Lady has lived in the White House. We pay enough for Trump’s golf trips,” chimed in another signer.

Before assuming that this is all much ado about nothing courtesy of folks with too much time on their hands, it helps to place the actual cost to taxpayers in perspective. So how much are we talking?

Let’s just say folks have every right to be all riled up, as this is quite a bit more than chump change.

“Police Commissioner James O'Neill told lawmakers last month that securing Trump Tower cost his department $127,000 to $146,000 each day, with this daily rate reaching $308,000 when the president is actually in the city. The cost came in under initial expectations,” AOL shares.

“Protection for all members of the president's immediate family has been standard in modern history, but the size of Trump's family - with four adult children in addition to minor Barron - has increased security costs.”

Wow. When looking at it from that perspective, it’s not too much to ask for the First Family’s living accommodations to become less complicated as we move forward. On a positive note, FLOTUS and Barron Trump are said to be staying in the White House permanently from this point - including during the school year.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that it’s as permanent as is being advertised. As for the rest of the Trump family, a little mindfulness of the costs to taxpayers in regards to their constant travels would be great as well.
