First Lady's Popularity Is Soaring - She's Leaving President In The Dust

Melania Trump got off to a rocky start in her role of First Lady. Like the rest of the Trump family, her approval ratings were so low that they threatened to set a record. But it seems as if public opinion of Melania is turning around; her popularity rating has climbed a full 17 points this year, making her one of the most popular Trumps. She's far more popular than her husband.

According to Gallup, in January, when President Trump first took office, only 37 percent of people polled viewed Melania favorably. This should come as no surprise. She was hardly on the campaign trail at all, and one of the few times she did come forward she (or more specifically, her speechwriter) plagiarized Michelle Obama.

Melania's popularity rating didn't start climbing for a while after her husband was officially sworn in. This is most likely because she stayed away from the White House, opting to remain with her 11-year-old son, Barron, in New York City so he could finish out the school year with his old friends.

She also sued a blogger who suggested she may have been a high-priced call girl in the past, and put her foot in her mouth when talking about her plans to start a First Lady 'brand' - something that would definitely violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution.

Some people were furious with Melania for not standing up to her husband and speaking out for women's rights. She also got a lot of backlash for wearing her extravagant clothing, with many headlines noting that one outfit of Melania's could have put an underprivileged child through college.

Others felt bad for Melania, claiming she was a prisoner stuck in a bad marriage and a bad situation. In some clips, she looked positively miserable. "Free Melania" shirts and T-shirts became a fad.

But ever since Mrs. Trump moved to Washington and started taking a more active role in the White House, people have started warming up to her. According to reports, Melania is simply an introvert. This doesn't mean she's miserable or a prisoner, nor does it mean she's too snobby to mingle with the 'little people'; it just means she really hates being the center of attention.

However, most people have come to definitely see Melania as Trump's 'better half'. She has been a charming hostess and guest when the Trumps were meeting with foreign dignitaries at home and abroad. She's had the effect of softening Trump.

Mrs. Trump has also been very busy meeting with hurricane victims, and she seems to really adore being with children. This comes as no real surprise; she's often called motherhood the joy of her life. Being a billionaire, she could have afforded multiple nannies and boarding school for Barron, but she instead takes a very hands-on role in raising him.

At this time, Melania's approval rating for December is 54 percent, meaning more people view her favorably than not. In January, 37 percent viewed her unfavorably, but now only 33 percent view her unfavorably.

A bigger change came with people who had no opinion on her. In January, that number was at 26 percent, but it’s fallen to 13 percent. It seems a lot of those people have developed opinions, and good ones, when it comes to the FLOTUS.

Donald Trump's approval rating is only 41 percent. He might want to consult his wife for tips on how to improve his image. Hopefully, she’ll convince him to kick the Twitter habit.
