Al Gore Slams President For Position On Climate Change

Former Vice President Al Gore, who served under Bill Clinton, may have lost the 2000 election to George W. Bush, but he got a lot of notice when championed the issue of climate change. His book 'An Inconvenient Truth' was made into an Emmy-award winning documentary that warned people about the threat of global warming.

Gore said that his initial impressions about current President Donald Trump were all wrong - he had more hope for Trump.

Gore appeared on 'The Late Show' with host Stephen Colbert and said that he had met with Trump about the Paris Accord right after the election. On the campaign trail, Trump had vowed to pull out of the international climate agreement that attempted to bring world nations together in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt cleaner, greener sources of energy.

Gore says, at the time, “I thought that there was a chance he would come to his senses. But I was wrong.”

Donald Trump ultimately pulled out of the agreement on June 1, which his predecessor had signed before leaving office. Many conservatives applauded the decision, citing that Trump was right in saying it was a 'bad deal' for America. The GOP believed that the accord would crush the American economy.

Others, mostly liberals, felt that pulling out was a terrible decision that would not only isolate the U.S., but it would result in the U.S. falling behind in areas like energy technology. Plus, of course, it's not helping the environment that one of the world's most populous industrialized nations will be ignoring standards developed to prevent the worst-case scenario.

Gore claims that some good came out of Trump's actions, though. "I worried that it would be a disastrous move, but immediately after that, all the other countries in the world doubled down, and said we're going to do even more."

"And here in the U.S., a lot of our most important governors, and mayors, and business leaders said, ‘We're still in the Paris agreement and we're going to meet the commitments of the country regardless of what Donald Trump tweets,'" Gore said.

The former VP urges people worried about climate change and the environment to take it up with politicians. "When candidates ask you for your support, tell them, 'This is important to me,' and depending on what their position is, tell them you'll either be for them or you'll do everything in your power to defeat them."

Gore also says that solar and wind energy are becoming more viable options now that technology advancements have helped bring the prices down. In some areas, it's becoming a better economic solution than burning fossil fuels for energy.

Fossil fuels are not only harmful to the environment, both when harvested and when used, but they’re finite resources that will one day soon begin to dry up. Any society that doesn’t move now to create new energy sources is going to be in bad shape when fossil fuels become scarce.
