Fox News Host Says Trump Happy To Reap Benefits Of Racism

Even Fox News is blasting President Trump’s delayed condemnation of racism following Saturday’s bloody attack in Charlottesville, Va., where a woman and two State Patrol officers were killed during clashes between white nationalists and anti-bigotry activists.

Eboni K. Williams, a host of “The Fox News Specialists,” lashed out at Trump for initially claiming “many sides” were responsible for the confrontation. She described the president’s comments as “cowardly and dangerous,” according to The Huffington Post. “I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt,” she said. “I can no longer do that, Mr. President. No more benefit ― all doubt. In a moment (when) you could have been crystal clear where you stand on the issue of inclusion, standing up against white supremacy and domestic terrorism, you very intentionally chose to be ambiguous and equivocate.”

Many Republicans as well as Democrats expressed outrage when Trump did not immediately denounce the white-supremacist groups that gathered in Charlottesville to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a city park. Police charged alleged neo-Nazi James Alex Fields, a 20-year-old Ohio man, with steering his sports car into a crowd of counter-protesters. A 32-year-old woman died and 19 others were injured. Fights between the two groups resulted in numerous other injuries. The state troopers were killed when their helicopter crashed.

On Monday, three days after the incident, Trump finally issued a full-throated repudiation of bigotry that called out the Ku Klux Klan and other so-called “alt-right” groups. “Racism is evil, and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans,” he said, reading from a teleprompter.

Many Americans of various political persuasions felt that the president’s words came too late. MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell argued that the delay sent a signal to white supremacists that the president supports them. Williams agreed. “President Trump, I do not know your heart, but what I do know for sure is that you’ve clearly done the math. You’ve decided that the portion of your base that is absolutely racist is so significant, so valuable that you hesitate ― even in the face of blatant, flagrant hatred ― to risk turning them off and thereby crippling your political stronghold,” she declared.

Williams continued: “You remember when you said your base would stick with you even if you shot someone on Fifth Avenue? I think you are right. I think they will stick with you through anything. ... They will even stick with you while you calm their fears and deep-seated anger around their perceived depreciation of the intrinsic value of whiteness in this country. Let’s be honest: That’s what this is all really about.”

HuffPost accused Trump of basing his company and his presidential campaign on racism. Williams said that while the president may not “personally” be a bigot, he is “all too happy to reap the benefits” from the political backing of white nationalists. “You are uniquely positioned to forcefully call out evil, anti-American domestic terrorists,” she explained. “We certainly cannot change what we fail to acknowledge. You even tacitly encourage them with evasive, irresponsible statements.”
