Game Brings 22-Year-Old NYC Rapper And 81-Year-Old Florida Grandmother Together

Human beings have been making friends by playing games together for millennia. The interaction of a game of checkers, chess or Pokemon Go can’t be beaten for getting to know someone and having fun.

That said, you generally don’t think about massive online games played against anonymous opponents as the same kind of experience that brings people together.

However, two veteran Words With Friends players from different backgrounds and who live thousands of miles apart show us that any game can bring two friends together.

The back story here is 300 competitive games of Words With Friends, a 22-year-old rapper and producer living in New York City, an 81-year-old grandmother living in Palm Beach, Florida.

It seems that Spencer Sleyon, whose rapper name is Half Empty, played retiree Rosalind Guttman on the word game app every day for five months.

Sleyon explains how it all happened in a tweet:

“so last summer i randomly met this 80 y/o woman on words with friends. we played 300+ games together and she actually ended up becoming a good friend of mine. today i got to go to florida and meet her in person”

In an interview with the media, Sleyon offered a little more detail: “Sometimes we’d speak about personal things, but nothing extra personal; politics, the election, hurricanes…”

He just felt that Guttman was “someone I could confide in,” Sleyon explained.

Sleyon noted that he was impressed when Guttman played the word “phat” in an early game between the two, and the Floridian said she appreciated the “masterful alliteration” in Sleyon’s username, FUCKFACEFILTH.

However, as is wont to happen in today’s busy world, Sleyon’s life became “too hectic” earlier this year, so for a while he stopped playing Words With Friends and he and Guttman temporarily lost touch.

However, fate intervened around three months later when his friend’s mom was touched by Sleyon’s story about his “best friend” from Words With Friends, and she told the rapper she would help them meet up.

According to various sources, Guttman and Sleyon enjoyed a friendly lunch at a nice café on Friday, and then Guttman showed Sleyon around her Palm Beach neighborhood.

Sleyon’s tweet about the two intergenerational friends finally meeting up had already received over a million likes as of Monday afternoon. The makers of the mega-hot app Words With Friends even reached out to thank Sleyon for sharing.

Social media is a constant competition, however, and while he was interacting on Twitter over the weekend, Sleyon made a point to clear up any confusion over who was doing better overall in his head to head battles with Guttman.

Sleyon highlighted in the interview how fantastic it was that his friendly meeting Guttman has had a positive impact on so many other people.

“Whatever people want to take from this story and however it makes them feel, I’m just glad and Rosalind and I can bring that to people,” he remarked.
