GOP Blasts Obama For Remaining Silent On Growing Weinstein Scandal

As part of the burgeoning Harvey Weinstein scandal, an amazing aside has developed right with it. The disgraced Hollywood mogul has been a generous Democratic donor and fundraiser through the years, and the silence from some notable names in the party has been nothing short of deafening. While a number of Democrats stepped right up to the plate to denounce Weinstein while pledging to return any donations, others haven’t been so quick on the trigger. As the Daily Mail shares, the list includes former President Barack Obama.

Obama has been blasted by both critics and allies alike for not speaking out right away, especially considering the fact that he hasn’t exactly stayed out of the spotlight since leaving office. He’s offered up his thoughts on all kinds of things, but there has been nary a peep about Weinstein, who has been accused of some abhorrent things. Michael Ahrens of the Republican National Committee offered up his assessment.

“While it took five days for Hillary Clinton's press secretary to tweet out a half-hearted statement from her, it's even more stunning that Barack Obama hasn't said a word about Harvey Weinstein,” he said. “Barack and Michelle Obama found time to take money from him and even host him at the White House, but somehow they can't find time to condemn him now.”

It’s not just members of the GOP pouncing on the opportunity to make a political point either. CNN political director David Chalian was singing a different tune this week as well.

“This is just unconscionable to me that people with huge megaphones, even more important because they did receive his donations and had been patronized by him, do not come out and speak against this,” Chalian said.

In addition to benefitting from Weinstein’s fundraising and donations, eldest daughter Malia Obama worked an internship with The Weinstein Company during her so-called gap year. The Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead also appeared on CNN recently, and she had some unkind words for the former president.

“If you took money from this person [Weinstein] because this person had really good progressive goals that were in line with the politics, great,” she said. "When you find out that this person is a monster, especially a monster towards women, why wouldn't you denounce it? Why would you have shame? Come out and denounce it.”

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton also took an inordinate amount of time offering up a statement on the scandal, but she has finally released one on social media.

“I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein,” she said. “The behavior described by women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behavior.”

While the focus should clearly be on the victims of the scandal - as well as ensuring that there aren’t others that haven’t been accounted for - it’s an incredibly bad look for those close to Weinstein to remain silent for so long. In Obama’s case, he wouldn’t hesitate to speak out if Obamacare was in danger of going by the wayside. Why has the cat suddenly got his tongue in this case?
