Gwyneth Paltrow Fails at Food Stamp Challenge but Wins at Raising Awareness

Actress and food and lifestyle writer, Gwyneth Paltrow had good intentions, but unfortunately she failed to meet her challenge of surviving on $29 worth of food for a whole week. This is the equivalent of what poor families in the U.S. get in food stamps.

The actress, along with her family and colleagues at her website Goop.com attempted the feat as part of a campaign to raise awareness for the Food Bank for New York City. On Goop.com, Paltrow confessed that four days into the challenge she "personally broke and had some chicken and fresh vegetables (and in full transparency, half a bag of black licorice)." She then said that she would give herself a "C-" for her effort.

1.7 million New Yorkers rely on food stamps, which adds up to $1.38 per meal. In addition, 1.4 million people throughout the five boroughs depend on soup kitchens. Some praised her for removing the stigma attached to living on food stamps. On the other hand, her critics noted her "uppity" purchases of kale, black beans and avocado.

Then, celebrity gossip website E! Online reported she had celebrated finishing the challenge with an $80 gourmet meal at Animal restaurant in Los Angeles. Still, she brought attention to the plight of many Americans in need of help. Now, other celebrities are joining the food bank campaign including musicians Blondie and Sting.
