He Died Eight Times, But When He Heard His Father's Plea, He Made A Miraculous Comeback

One Maryland teen was coming home from swim practice when his car collided with a speeding truck. His injuries were so extensive that it didn't look like he was going to survive.

In fact, while in the hospital in a coma for several months, he died eight times and was resuscitated. Then he heard his grieving father's plea by his bed one night, and a miracle unfolded.

Brian Boyle's life changed on a dime when a speeding truck driver slammed into him. The 18-year-old had just graduated high school and had his whole life ahead of him one moment, the next moment his life was destroyed.

His ribs and clavicle had been shattered. He had organ damage, including his heart, which was ripped across his chest, and he lost 60 percent of his blood.

Boyle was in a coma for two months. He underwent 14 major surgeries, as well as dozens of blood and plasma transfusions.

He died eight times. A medical team continued to try and save the young man, but his family was told to prepare for the worst.

Even if Boyle were to survive, doctors told his family that it was unlikely he would recover. They didn't think he'd ever walk again, and what other permanent damage he might suffer could only be surmised.

Garth and JoAnne, Boyle's devastated parents, couldn't give up. The family supported each other and strove to support Boyle.

They prayed for a miracle, and a miracle came.

Garth went to the hospital one day when things looked grim, and he said he gave his son what he calls a 'pep talk'. He told Boyle that he was the light of his parents' lives, and that they needed him.

Amazingly, Boyle woke up at that point.

He heard his father's pep talk and responded to it. It inspired him to fight.

Boyle not only fought but he won. He exceeded all expectations his doctors had for him.

Not only is he walking again, but just three years after his accident, he signed up for the Iron Man triathlon. He’s now working as a personal trainer.

"I believe that by having this unique foundation it can help me be the best triathlon coach that I can be, because I understand the power of the mind, the body, and also the human spirit," Boyle tells TriathalonInspires.com.

"Life is really what you choose to make of it, the more you sacrifice and put in, the more you’ll get in return."

Boyle appeared on 'The Ellen Show' to share his story with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. He says that many times when he was laying there he could only communicate by blinking.

The nurses used to put on her show for him every day and he'd listen and be inspired by the stories he heard. The show took him away and allowed him to escape for an hour every day.

Boyle and his parents tried to give Ellen some of the credit for his miraculous recovery, but the host wouldn’t accept it. Though she’s happy that her show made him happy, she says he deserves the credit for overcoming his tremendous challenges.

"What an inspiration you are," Ellen told Boyle. "Anyone out there that thinks you can't get out of whatever you're sitting in right now, look what can happen to you."
