Latest White House Leak Confirms Everyone's Worst Fears About Trump

Donald Trump said a lot of things to rally support on the campaign trail. One thing the presidential hopeful promised his base was that he would build a wall along the southern border. He also insisted that Mexico would pay for it, despite the president of Mexico stating in no uncertain terms that it was never going to happen. According to a new leak from the White House, Trump knew all along that the campaign promise was a load of bunk.

During his campaign days, Trump would face the roaring conservative crowds at rallies and work up the crowd by shouting, "What are we going to do?"

The crowd would then join in a chant, crying, "Build that wall!"

"And who is going to pay for it?" Trump would ask.

"Mexico!" the crowd would respond enthusiastically on cue.

Former President of Mexico Vincente Fox put his feelings in no uncertain terms: "We’ll never pay for that f--king wall,” he said.

Nieto posted a three-minute video to Twitter stating he didn't believe in a wall, and his country wasn't paying for one. It just wasn’t going to happen. "Let me tell you, Mr. President, this is not a personal difference. It has nothing to do with you personally, Mr. President. But it is an unthinkable that I cannot ignore this because we find this completely unacceptable for Mexicans to pay for the wall that you are thinking of building," he said.

Classified transcripts from a White House phone call between President Donald Trump and Mexican President Pena Nieto shows that Trump never really expected Mexico to pay for the wall he promised. During the first phone call between the two presidents, Trump begged Nieto not to tell the press that Mexico wasn't footing the bill.

The phone call took place on January 27, just seven days after Trump's inauguration. The Washington Post reports that Trump told Nieto that it was okay that Mexico didn't pay, as long as they didn't say that publicly. "It will come out in the wash, and that is okay," said Trump, according to the transcript.

Trump then added, "...[I]f you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that."

President Trump seemed worried about how his public image might suffer if he backtracked on one of his boldest campaign pledges. He didn't seem very concerned about fulfilling his promise; the only thing he was concerned with was that the Mexican government might make him look bad.

"You cannot say that to the press," Trump reiterated to Nieto.

Another phone call that was leaked includes one Trump placed to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump vented to Putin about other phone calls he had to make, in which he was forced to uphold agreements to take in refugees.

"This is going to kill me," Trump vented. "I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country. And now I am agreeing to take 2,000 people."

So much for campaign promises.
