At Least One Trump Is Maintaining Popularity - Melania Moves Up The First Lady List

While it’s not an exact science, polling remains a popular method for taking the temperature of voters on all sorts of things. As we saw during last year’s presidential election, polls can miss the mark pretty badly sometimes. If last year’s election season served as an opportunity to grade the entire polling industry, then that industry would still be coming to terms with a big fat F.

The overwhelming majority of polls predicted a clear-cut victory for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and that’s partially what led to President Donald Trump’s victory to appear to be so shocking. When one side thinks they have things in the bag, a stunning turn of events such as that one can be pretty hard to take. Of course, the Clinton campaign feeling that they had things in the bag led them to approach things differently than Trump did, but that’s another story for another day.

Despite the collective black eye, pollsters still remain gainfully employed. With the election in the rearview mirror and mid-term elections still a ways off, the focus turns to things such as favorability rankings. As Newsweek shares, one of the latest polls points out that we may have a budding rivalry in the White House.

“At the very least, Melania Trump is the most popular adult living in the White House right now. Her husband is viewed unfavorably by 51 percent of voters and favorably by 47 percent of voters, according to the Fox poll,” according to Newsweek. “The poll surveyed 1,017 voters from June 25-27. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.”

For a president that seems to be so obsessed with ratings, we’ll assume that this tidbit has not gone unnoticed. That being said, it’s common for the First Lady to achieve generally favorable rankings, barring some kind of major slip up. If Melania continues to present herself as well as she does, then we can expect the rankings to climb even higher.

As for polling data itself, it should always be examined with a grain of salt. In a perfect world, respondents will be asked for their specific party affiliation. Polls that ask that simple question will typically provide a breakdown of respondents political leanings at the bottom, and that can be particularly telling information. There’s a pretty good chance that a poll that skews heavily towards one side or the other will provide the answers you would expect when engaging in a discussion with a member of the party in question.

In a perfect world, there will be a clear balance between Republican and Democratic respondents. If you come across a poll that tilts heavily one way, don’t be surprised if it paints a certain picture. That picture will typically resemble one that would be hanging in the living room of a person that tilts heavily the same way. In hindsight, perhaps the pollsters that didn’t adhere to that simple concept are now understanding why they had so much egg to wipe off of their faces in the wake of the presidential election.
