Melania Trump Takes A Cue From Michelle Obama, Starts Making Some Wardrobe Changes

Melania Trump was used to life as a former fashion model and billionaire’s wife before her husband was elected president. When she began stepping out to play her role as First Lady, she got a lot of backlash because people felt they couldn't relate to her. Her flashy wardrobe is stunning, but made her often seem out of place with ordinary people, and it was hard to overlook that one jacket cost more than many families would earn in a year. She's finally catching on to what her predecessor did, and it's a smart move.

Perhaps Melania is just used to a luxurious designer wardrobe, perhaps she was just very conscious of being in the public eye, or perhaps she wanted to get back at all those fashion designers who refused to work with her because of her husband. Either way, Melania's wardrobe has caused several stirs over the past year. It seemed her showing up to Italy in a $50,000 Dolce & Gabbana jacket or going to greet hurricane victims in disaster areas in stiletto heels overshadowed anything else she might have said and done.

It is refreshing to note that Melania has been spotted wearing a new blouse. This time, instead of a garment that costs thousands from an exclusive designer, she's donning an off-the-rack J. Crew shirt that cost $75. The FLOTUS was spotted in the shirt on her way back to the White House after a trip to Camp David with her husband.

Melania donned the new shirt along with a baseball cap and sneakers to spend some time with the Coast Guard. The casual ensemble looked great, and for once the First Lady seemed more relatable to the people of the country.

Perhaps Melania has discovered former First Lady Michelle Obama's secret to looking great, but still appearing warm and approachable. Mrs. Obama frequently mixed up high fashion pieces with more down to earth fashions from stores like Target and J. Crew. This great style made her a fashion icon in her own right, but not at the expense of her role as 'mom in chief'.

It wouldn't be the first time Melania Trump copied Michelle Obama. After Donald Trump was elected, Melania gave a speech that had apparently taken entire phrases from Mrs. Obama's early speeches. It was an embarrassing moment for Mrs. Trump. However, if she's copying this fashion strategy from Michelle, it works, and it's a smart move, politically speaking.

Those who love Melania's sense of fashion, though, needn't worry about the FLOTUS going too overboard. She showed up to the Thanksgiving turkey pardoning in a Victoria Beckham burnt orange turtleneck sweater, a gorgeous high-waisted Hervé Pierre brown leather pencil skirt and a stylish Stella McCartney floral coat. She may be pulling her look back a little, but she’s not giving up entirely on her lavish wardrobe. It’ll be interesting to see how she goes forward and if she continues to experiment with mixing high and low fashion.
