Michelle Obama Shows She Doesn't Deprive The Family With Her Apple Cobbler Recipe

Michelle Obama, who was not just our First Lady for eight years but Mom-in-Chief, dedicated a lot of her time toward promoting health and fitness. Especially for children and families, Mrs. Obama hoped to inspire people to move more and make healthier eating choices at home and at school. But even with all her efforts to teach people about a healthier lifestyle, even she has to admit that everyone needs a little bit of balance.

The former FLOTUS gave the world a Christmas gift when she shared her delicious Apple Cobbler recipe. She may not make this at her every-day dinners, but it shows that Mrs. Obama knows how to indulge and splurge when it counts.

According to Michelle, she's been making the classic dessert dish for a long time, and tweaking it over that period until it was perfected. She first dished on her famous dish in 'Yankee Magazine'.

"I’ve been making this cobbler for a long time, so I usually just eyeball how much needs to go in," said Obama. "People might want more or less sugar, but this is how our family and friends like it. This recipe makes one cobbler, which is like a double pie."

People were a little shocked to find the cobbler uses biscuit dough instead of pie dough- but you get the best of both worlds here. Plus, you can use pre-made refrigerator pie crusts if you don't think your pastry skills are up to par.

According to Michelle’s recipe, you should preheat the oven to 325 degrees, then butter and flour a large baking dish. Roll out the pie crusts so they're very thin - it'll take about three sheets. Use half of the dough to line the bottom of the pan and prick a few holes in it with a fork.

Next, make the filling. Peel, core and chop eight Granny Smith apples. In a bowl, add about 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar to the apple slices (but you can add a half cup more or less, depending on how demanding your sweet tooth is).

Sprinkle with 1 1/2 tsp. of cinnamon, 1 tsp. of nutmeg, 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/4 cup white flour, and mix. Pour that mixture into the baking bowl.

Take a stick of butter and cut about 3/4 of it into small pieces. Scatter those butter dots over the apple filling and then cover the cobbler with the rest of the crust. Be sure to pinch the edges of the dough to seal it.

Melt the remaining 1/4 stick of butter and brush it on top of the crust.

Put the cobbler in the oven and reduce the heat to 300. It should take about 3 hours to bake, but you should check it in about 2.5 hours to make sure the crust isn't burning. If it's getting too brown, cover it with foil.

Michelle says the long baking time makes the crust flaky, which is how she says Barack likes it. Plus, Michelle says you can take this time to go for a walk so you can burn off some calories in preparation for the decadent dessert.

Let the cobbler cool for a while before serving it; it's good warm or cold. A scoop of ice cream on top or some fresh whipped cream will be the perfect toppers.
