Michelle Obama Gives Sage Life Advice

The former First Lady of the United States has offered a gold nugget to those trying to get through the Donald Trump presidency.

With health care hanging in the balance and a new tax proposal that threatens to result in increased taxes for middle and lower-class wage earners, a lot of people are bracing for the worst. Michelle Obama appeared at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and graced us all with her wisdom.

Mrs. Obama appeared in New York City on Thursday night with moderator Thelma Golden, curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem. The William H. Mortensen Hall, which seats 2,800, sold out, and an additional 950 seats in the Belding Theater, where the discussion was simulcast, were also sold out. Those people who waited in line to snap up tickets for Thursday night were not disappointed.

Mrs. Obama is brilliant when it comes to helping ease people's concerns about Trump, even though she never actually mentions Trump by name. Once again, she had some brilliant advice for everyone.

If you were terrified of things going downhill for you over the next three years, listen to Michelle.

“Focus on what you can control," she said. “Be a good person every day. Vote. Read. Treat one another kindly. Follow the law. Don't tweet nasty stuff.”

It's short enough to fit in a single tweet, but speaks volumes of wisdom.

The current political climate can terrify a lot of people, and the headlines can be overwhelming and make us all feel powerless. By focusing on what we can control, it makes you feel more productive and makes the challenges you face seem more manageable.

No one is ever going to be able to come in and fix things in one fell swoop. It's going to take a lot of little actions by a lot of people to turn things around.

The reminder to be a good person, to treat each other with kindness, to adhere to laws and avoid mudslinging on social media is a reminder that a lot of us can use these days. Even the best of people who are angry and frustrated can fly off the handle and make a bad choice, but we're only hurting ourselves and each other.

That kind of behavior isn't going to fix anything in the long run; it's only going to make things worse. The country is divided enough, it's going to take a positive attitude to get people on board with fixing it.

Everyone should, of course, read and educate themselves so that they can understand what is going on and what needs to be done. We are blessed to live in an age in which tons of information can be found with the push of a few buttons, but the downside of that is that a lot of information out there is just plain inaccurate.

By educating ourselves we learn to separate the wheat from the chaff.

And of course, Mrs. Obama reminds us of the importance of voting. When people don't get to the polls, this is exactly the kind of mess that results. A lot of people complain about the state of affairs but if we don't get down to the voting booths - not just for presidential elections, but for local elections - we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

Many lamented over the fact that Michelle doesn't seem interested in running for president. The idea of another eight years with the Obamas in the White House, working as a team, would be a dream come true to some.

Michelle had a wise answer for that as well: "A lot of people say 'oh, you should run....' If we keep looking for that one person to run, we're getting it wrong. We don't need another Michelle or Barack, we need thousands and thousands of them all over the world.”
