No Matter How Often Trump Tweets, Obama's Still Got Him Beat In The 'Top 10'

Despite his regular use and constant promotion of Twitter, President Trump has not scored a place in the top 10 list for the most retweeted tweets of 2017. However, Trump’s predecessor, former President Barack Obama, managed to snag three of the most viral positions.

This year, the top ten most retweeted tweets focused on everything from politics, to hurricanes, to chicken nuggets. Here are some of the most memorable tweets on the top 10 list for 2017:

The first person to feature on the list was Carter Wilkinson, a high school student in Nevada who approached the official Twitter account for Wendy’s and requested a whole year of free fast food, asking the account manager how many retweets he’d need to receive in order to get a year’s supply of free nuggets. Here is the original tweet: “Yo @Wendys how many retweets for a year of free chicken nuggets?”

Another notable fixture of the 2017 list was Obama’s social media response to the death of Heather Heyer, a counter-protestor who was killed by a white nationalist terrorist at the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally.

The tweet, which reads: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion…”, received over 1.7 million retweets and remains the most ‘liked’ tweet in the social media platform’s history.

The Twitter response from famed singer Ariane Grande after her concert in Manchester was interrupted by a terrorist attack that killed 22 people also featured on this year’s list. “Broken. From the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don't have words,” wrote the distressed singer in a tweet that received over 1.1 million retweets.

Barack Obama’s second tweet to feature on the list was written shortly after he finished his farewell address in January.

“Thank you for everything. My last ask is the same as my first,” wrote the then-outgoing president. “I'm asking you to believe—not in my ability to create change, but in yours.” The tweet, which was uploaded from the official @POTUS Twitter account, was one of the most viral tweets from Obama’s official account, garnering some 870,000 retweets.

Although none of Trump’s tweets feature on this list, the current president’s name does crop up in one of the most retweeted tweets of 2017. Specifically, the president was mentioned when LeBron James, the star of the Cleveland Cavaliers, used Twitter to strike back at Trump for his comments about Steph Curry choosing not to visit the White House after the Golden Warriors won the NBA Championship.

“U bum @StephenCurry30 already said he ain't going!” wrote LeBron. “So therefore ain't no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!”

President Obama’s final tweet as President of the United States was one of the last items on the 2017 list. Garnering over 630,000 retweets, the viral tweet read: “It's been the honor of my life to serve you. You made me a better leader and a better man.” Obama wrote and signed off on the tweet hours before he left the Oval Office ready for President Trump.
