People Notice What Melania Took From Michelle Obama

Recent photos of Melania Trump have been making the rounds, and people are noticing that she may have taken a page out of Michelle Obama's book.

First Lady Melania Trump has been knocking it out of the park on the fashion front since well before the presidency was even a glimmer in her husband’s eye, but she seems to be going through a bit of a transformation.

The reasons for that are open to debate, but a popular theory has emerged to help explain it. As Vanity Fair shares, she seems to be taking a page out of the book of former First Lady Michelle Obama.

As well know by now, the fashion sense of the First Lady is always under intense scrutiny, but it seems to have intensified in recent years. Michelle isn’t under the microscope anymore, and it’s now Melania’s turn. Those that closely follow such things are walking away with feelings of deja vu.

“Melania Trump appears to be taking a page out of the Michelle Obama book of fashion. The usually designer-clad Trump flew from Camp David to D.C. over the weekend wearing a surprisingly affordable $75 pink gingham shirt from J.Crew along with a pair of matching J Brand pink pants and Manolo Blahnik flats,” Vanity Fair reports.

“According to Yahoo Style Canada, the button-up top is a discontinued piece from the brand’s 2012 collection. Perhaps she’s been waiting to save the economical top for just the right moment in her First Lady reign.”

Coincidence? Perhaps, but Melania seems to be drawing inspiration from Michelle in other ways as well.

“She has kept Mrs. Obama’s vegetable garden, and shown interest in women’s empowerment, military families and children’s issues. Mrs. Obama championed all as first lady. But where Mrs. Obama frequently hosted public events in the garden to encourage healthy eating, Mrs. Trump has yet to hold an activity there,” Detroit News shares.

“Next month, Mrs. Trump will lead the U.S. delegation to the Invictus Games, an Olympics-style competition for wounded military personnel. The Obama White House helped promote the games after Britain’s Prince Harry created them in 2014.”

As Myra Gutin, a Rider University professor and author of “The President’s Partner: The First Lady in the Twentieth Century,” sees it, Melania’s latest fashion choices are a clear sign that Melania feels a bit of a kinship with her predecessor, albeit from afar.

“She really did admire Michelle Obama very much,” Gutin explains. “Maybe she’s following in those footsteps and is expressing her admiration by doing things that, if they aren’t the same, are similar.”

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s spokeswoman, notes that of course Melania feels tremendous respect for her predecessor, but she indicates her fashion sense stays true to the notes she has always hit.

“She is an individual with her own iconic style and has been staying true to herself in this new role,” Grisham said.

So is Melania blatantly copying Michelle’s style? We’ll consider that both inconclusive and unlikely. It’s natural to draw inspiration from predecessors in terms of what works and what doesn’t, and that seems to be what’s at play here.
