Rob Reiner: Trump Is Worse Than Weinstein

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Along that line of thinking, it’s also possible that two things are bad enough in their own right that there’s no need to compare them to figure out which one is worse. Unfortunately, that’s become a tried and true way for many folks to get their point across. That was on display recently when acclaimed director Rob Reiner was chatting about his upcoming film. As the New York Daily News shares, current events would come up. Unsurprisingly, Reiner had a lot to say.

Reiner was at the Hamptons International Film Festival to discuss his upcoming film, “LBJ,” which stars Woody Harrelson and was screened at the festival. The director had plenty to say about the film, but BuzzFeed film critic Alison Willmore felt the need to kick things up a notch to discuss some current events.

The film industry has been rocked by a mounting scandal that centers on movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who has been accused of being a sexual predator. The scandal seems to be mounting by the minute, as more and more women are speaking out. Reiner was asked for his thoughts, and he offered up a crystal clear assessment.

“Harvey Weinstein is bad. He did a really bad thing,” said Reiner. “There’s no defending that. It’s horrible.”

Point made, and now it’s time to talk about the movie again, right? Nope, as Reiner decided that he should draw a parallel between Weinstein and President Donald Trump. Reiner has been an incredibly outspoken critic of the president, but he raised some eyebrows with his decision to pull Trump into the conversation.

“Yes, Harvey Weinstein’s a bad guy,” he said, “but it’s not equal to the President of the United States.”

In fairness to Reiner, he was trying to make the point that Trump has also been accused of sexual harassment by a number of women as well. That’s a fair point, but that topic has already been dissected ad nauseam. The topic in question was Weinstein, and it doesn’t sound like this scandal will be one that’s disappearing anytime soon.

From a political standpoint, the Weinstein story is a pretty sensitive one. He’s been an incredibly high-profile donor and fundraiser for the Democratic Party through the years. While some members of the party have spoken out and pledged to return any contributions from Weinstein in response to the scandal, the silence from some party bigwigs has been deafening.

Reiner worked that into the conversation as well, as he wondered aloud why politicians have not pledged to return donations from Trump. In short, it was a pretty awkward look for a man that’s touting a movie about a former commander-in-chief. Everyone is pretty clear about the fact that Reiner is no fan of Trump, but there’s a time and a place for those discussions. When you’re trying to convince an entire country to part with their hard-earned dollars to enjoy the fruits of your labor while enjoying some escapism, that may not be the best time to bring politics into the mix.
