Every Member Of The Royal Family Has To Carry One Disturbing Thing With Them

The British Royal Family looks like such a glamorous lifestyle. But that's just how it looks from the outside. On the inside, even royals have rules that they have to follow. One rule involves a rather depressing reminder that they have to always keep in their suitcases when traveling.

If you are a member of the Royal Family, you'd think one of the biggest perks would be the wardrobe - especially for the women. Just think of all the fashions you'd get to wear, all the top designers fighting for the chance to dress you up in their finest fashions. Just look at royal and fashion icon Kate Middleton, and her enviable wardrobe.

But if you're a royal, there is one thing you must always pack in your suitcase, no matter where you're going: a black outfit. The reason behind this requirement is not exactly something you want to think about when you're on vacation. The black outfit is required in case someone dies when you're traveling.

The tradition started when the Queen was away and her father died. She had to return to England, and she didn't have a black dress packed. The idea of the Queen stepping off the plane after the death of her father in some colorful vacation frock was horrifying, so she had to wait for a black outfit to be brought to her. Ever since then, it's become a staple of the family travel wardrobe.

There are a lot of other rules the royals have to follow. Some, like the black outfit, are practical. For example, they are not allowed to vote, or run for office. Since they're such powerful figureheads, general consensus agrees that they ought to let the general public choose elected officials without the monarch's influence. People fear this could easily lead to corruption.

They also have to adhere to endless rules about protocol that involves order of entry, seating arrangements and procession. These time-honored traditions are upheld with the utmost strictness.

Another interesting fact of being the Queen is that you don't need a passport. This is because passports are issued in the name of the Queen, so the Queen herself doesn't need one.

Some of the rules are just plain silly - and often overlooked. For instance, at one time, royals were not allowed to eat shellfish. It was too dangerous, given that shellfish at a time before refrigeration could be a gamble. But many members of the royal family have been photographed defying this rule.

Another strange prohibition is that the royals are not allowed to play Monopoly. According to Prince Andrew, Duke of York, "We’re not allowed to play Monopoly at home. It gets too vicious.”

It is amusing to think about young royals rebelling against the status quo by hiding in some basement closet in the palace, breaking out a board game. You know those royals—they never shy away from a good scandal.
