Stranger Spanks Toddler For Asking His Own Father For Candy

A father took his two-year-old son to the grocery story in Newnan, Georgia on Tuesday night. Like many kids, when they got to the checkout line, the toddler saw the shelves full of colorful candy and asked his dad for some.

A complete stranger came over and smacked the boy's hands away from the candy rack, then slapped the boy on the backside.

Police showed up at the Kroger supermarket after being called about a 62-year-old man taking the liberty of trying to discipline another man's child. The unnamed child wanted candy, not unlike any other two-year-old in the history of the world.

Instead of letting the father deal with it, Juan Martinez took the situation into his own hands.

Martinez swatted the boy's hand away, and swatted the boy on the rear end an unknown amount of times. The stunned father, James Morris, looked up at Martinez.

"This is what we do to kids in Mexico," he recalls Martinez saying at the time.

"Buddy, we’re not in Mexico," Morris says he responded.

The father was outraged, but several employees in the store quickly jumped in and separated the two men. Martinez was detained while police were called.

According to the police report, Martinez may have been drinking. Officers said he smelled like alcohol, and when they questioned him, his speech was slurred.

Morris said the 2-year-old, says that his shon wasn't hurt, but that's not the point.

Martinez was arrested and charged with battery and obstruction. According to local news outlets, the officer's body cam shows Martinez resisted arrest.

“Juan was taken to the ground and we were able to grab his arm so it could be cuffed,” said one of the arresting officers. “We had to stand Juan up and escort him out of the business.”

Martinez is currently being held on a $3,390 bond.

When he's released, Martinez won't be welcomed at Kroger anymore. The company has reportedly put him on the 'criminal trespass log' and he's banned from the store for life.

Spanking is still a very controversial subject when it comes to child discipline. Most child experts agree that corporal punishment should be discouraged. Studies show it’s ineffective at best, and potentially damaging at worst.

Children who are spanked grow up are more likely to exhibit anit-social behavior, aggression and cognitive difficulties, according to one major study that spanned 50 years, and examined more than 160,000 children.

Advocates of spanking say that it is, for some children and in some cases, the only effective form of discipline. Advocates argue that, when used properly, spanking can be a deterrent to misbehavior without harming the child or causing lasting damage.

Most people who advocate spanking point to the fact that they and most other people they know were spanked and turned out fine.

No matter what your stance on spanking is, one thing should be clear: it is absolutely out of line to spank a child that doesn’t belong to you. Parents have the right to decide for themselves when and how a child should be disciplined, and strangers shouldn’t overstep those boundaries when the child is around.

Undermining parents and violent behavior just confuses the kid, and in the long run is not going to help. If spanking is involved, like Martinez, it could even land you in jail.
