Doctors Write Off Teens Pain- Dies From Blood Clots 2 Days Later

A 15-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after complaining of severe chest pains. Her family says that she was dismissed as having a minor illness, and sent home. Two weeks later, the child died.

The family is now blaming the hospital for negligence.

Two weeks ago, a California family brought Yunique Morris to the San Joaquin General Hospital because the teen was complaining of chest pain. The teen was diagnosed with general chest wall pain, a minor illness.

Doctors gave her antibiotics and pain medication, and let the teen go.

Things got progressively worse for the young girl, notes Wanda Ely, Yunique’s grandmother. “Her health just started going downhill,” Ms. Ely told Fox 40. “It got to the point where she couldn’t even go up and down a flight of stairs without getting out of breath.”

Days later, Yunique was brought back to the hospital for a follow-up, but was again dismissed with the minor illness. Doctors told her that she was going to get better, and to just be patient. But things got worse still for her.

“She felt nobody was helping her and didn’t really understand what was going through her body but she knew something wasn’t right,” Ely said.

On Thursday, Yunique's mother got a frightening text message from her daughter. “I NEED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL, I JUST PASSED OUT, I’M THROWING UP NOW,” it read in all caps.

The closest person was her older brother, who ran to her side and rushed her to the emergency room. Doctors discovered the girl had numerous blood clots in her chest. Hours later, the teen passed away.

“My granddaughter was walking around suffering from these blood clots for a period of two weeks and us not knowing that these were going to be her last days,” said Ms. Ely, who is heartbroken over her granddaughter’s death.

The parents are demanding answers. An autopsy is being conducted at Children's Hospital in Oakland. The devastated family believes that if the hospital hadn't ignored the child's complaints twice that she might have gotten the proper treatment sooner.

"A bright shining star on earth gone much too soon is a new star in Heaven," reads a GoFundMe page set up by the family. They're trying to raise money for Yunique's funeral costs. "She was a Great Daughter, a Great Sister, a Great friend. An Honor Roll Student, Athlete and Cheerleader! She was Love personified."

“It is with unfathomable grief that we prepare to do what no family should ever have to do. We are asking for donations to assist the family in covering these unexpected expenses, in the face of absolute grief,” they write.

“She is missed and there is a void in our hearts. Thank you in advance for your donations and prayers in this difficult time, they are greatly appreciated.”

San Joaquin General Hospital refuses to comment on the case at this time.
