Tragedy Strikes Healthy 2-Headed Baby After Parents Ignore Doctor's Instructions

Doctors delivered a set of conjoined twins, who have been called a 'baby boy with two heads'. Doctors urged the parents to leave the children in the hospital for much-needed care, but the parents of the children decided to bring the babies home. The next day, the babies both died.

The 20-year-old unnamed mother from India came to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in labor. She hadn't had any pre-natal care and the parents were stunned when she gave birth to a 'two-headed boy'.

In reality, the two babies were conjoined twins. Weighing in at a combined birth weight of approximately five pounds, they shared a body with one pair of arms and one pair of legs, much like Abby and Brittany Hensel, conjoined twins from America who starred in their own reality show. The girls also shared one pair of arms, one body, and two heads.

The baby boys who were born in India shocked much of the hospital staff, and people began coming to get a glimpse of them. Doctors considered whether or not they could be surgically separated, but decided against it.

"The operation is possible in some cases of conjoined twins but here it was nearly impossible," said Dr. Jaiprakash Narayan, a pediatrician who cared for the twins. "Despite having two pairs of all of their internal organs they were all trapped in one body, with only one pair of arms and legs. You cannot separate such children."

The babies were suffering from breathing difficulties, and hospital staff urged the mother and 24-year-old father to leave them in the hospital. Despite the risks, the parents decided to bring their babies home.

Approximately 32 hours after being brought home, the babies died. The parents are said to be devastated and mourning the loss of their sons. The couple hadn't had any other children, which is why doctors believe they didn't take precautions by seeing a doctor during pregnancy. They assumed they were young and healthy and would give birth to healthy children.

Conjoined twins are usually born with health problems, especially those who share a torso. Only four surviving sets of these twins are known, but if they're able to survive then the biggest obstacle to living life is the shock people experience when first seeing them. With a supportive family and community, however, some sets of conjoined twins can overcome this.

Take Abby and Brittany, who are 27 years old. The girls have graduated high school and college. They can use a computer and drive, and have expressed the desire to get married and have children someday.

The most famous conjoined twins from the 19th century coined the phrase ‘Siamese twins’ because they hailed from Siam (now Vietnam). Chang and Eng Bunker married two sisters. Chang fathered 12 children, while Eng fathered 10 or 11 (records are unclear). Being conjoined twins didn’t seem to stop them from living a full life.
