Trump Aide Makes Shocking Claim About Immigrants

With some new immigration plans in the works, White House aides have been facing a number of questions from the press. One particular exchange garnered a lot of attention when a White House aide and a CNN reporter's conversation became heated.

For years, the Statue of Liberty has stood in New York harbor and has been considered a universal symbol of freedom. And if you're among the people who thought that, a White House aide says you're wrong. The spokesperson gave a CNN reporter a hostile history lesson yesterday, stating that the Statue of Liberty has nothing to do with immigrants.

Senior White House Advisor Stephen Miller was confronted by CNN journalist Jim Acosta yesterday, who asked whether Trump's proposed skill-based, English-required immigration plan was in line with American traditions. "The Statue of Liberty says, 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses' ... doesn't say anything about speaking English or being a computer programmer," said Acosta.

Miller shot back at Acosta that he's misinformed. According to Miller, the poem inscribed at the base of the statue was not originally there.

"The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of liberty lighting the world; American liberty lighting the world. The poem you were referring to was added later," Miller said. "It's not actually part of the original Statue of Liberty."

Acosta and Miller went back and forth in a heated argument about immigration. Miller nitpicked over the difference between green cards and illegal immigration. Miller said the notion that Trump’s bill is racist ‘is so wrong and so insulting’, as he argued that it isn’t much different from current immigration laws.

Miller accused Acosta of supporting unvetted immigration, which he says hurts legal immigrants and unemployed African-Americans. He calls it a ‘compassionate immigration measure’.

According to social media, Miller’s entire understanding of history, in which he roots his argument, is completely off the mark.

"Stephen Miller has turned himself simultaneously into a Statue of Arrogance and a National Monument of Ignorance," wrote Steven Goldstein, executive director of the Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect. "His subpar knowledge of American history, as reflected in Emma Lazarus' poem, means he couldn't pass President Trump's new immigration test. Therefore, Stephen, please leave."

The poem 'The New Colossus' was penned by Emma Lazarus, a descendent of Jewish immigrants. She was asked to write a sonnet to help raise money at an auction for the Statue of Liberty's pedestal. She was inspired by the plight of her immigrant ancestors, and the poem was inscribed on the base of the statue on a plaque.

The National Endowment for the Humanities at NEH.gov explains, in an online lesson plan about the Statue of Liberty, "Originally conceived as an emblem of the friendship between the people of France and the U.S. and a sign of their mutual desire for liberty, over the years the Statue has become much more. It is the Mother of Exiles, greeting millions of immigrants and embodying hope and opportunity for those seeking a better life in America. It stirs the desire for freedom in people all over the world. It represents the United States itself."

Miller didn't get the memo.
