Trump, Sessions Threaten Press And Leakers - Dan Rather Has Epic Response

Leakers and whistle blowers are a hot-button topic when it comes to politics, and a lot of people have mixed feelings about it. Sometimes people feel the public has a right to know, while other times people worry about the government being put in jeopardy with leaked secrets. Often, people feel one way or the other depending on how much they actually like the person holding office. A new report on climate change that was leaked to the New York Times recently, however, may have been a huge favor to everyone.

Dan Rather, former CBS News anchor, appeared on MSNBC's 'All In with Chris Hayes' on Tuesday to talk about the leaked report. The report that was leaked to the press from the White House shared some dire news about climate change. Rather says that the leaker did a 'public service' for the country.

"Obviously President Trump and those in his administration didn't want this information out, but somebody somewhere said the public needs to know this," Rather explained. "They did a public service by letting somebody in journalism, in this case, The New York Times, know it."

The report made a bombshell conclusion, stating that it was 'extremely likely' that human influences play a major role in climate change. This has been a fact that many scientists have reported for years now, but that the GOP has refused to accept. Trump in particular has shrugged off arguments about man-made global warming.

"Many lines of evidence demonstrate that human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse gases, are primarily responsible for observed climate changes in the industrial era,” said the Times of the 2017 U.S. Global Change Research Program’s Climate Science Special Report. “There are no alternative explanations, and no natural cycles are found in the observational record that can explain the observed changes in climate."

After pulling out of the Paris Accord, this conclusion by Trump's own agencies would certainly be an embarrassment to the White House. Another embarrassment is that it was leaked at all. The leaks from the White House keep coming, despite Trump and his administration frantically attempting to stem the flow. It seems the president just cannot get control of his own people.

The president usually prefers to run his own narrative than let the facts be heard. Rather says the White House shouldn't be withholding anything; the public needs to be informed. "In our system of government, it is absolutely essential, it’s imperative, that you have an informed citizenry," he explained.

"Look, news so often is what the public needs to know that someone, particularly someone in power, doesn't want them to know. Everything else is pretty much advertising and propaganda," Rather added. "And it is true that on some rare occasions, very rare occasions, matters of national security are involved, but most of the time, leaks and whistleblowers don't want to be identified, they feel so strongly about something that the public has to know."
