Waters: Trump Should Be Worried About Pence Coming For His Job

Maxine Waters is a well-known critic of the Trump administration. She's made countless appearances at events and on television to explain her opposition to Donald Trump and those around him. This time, however, she may have offered a bit of advice. Vice President Mike Pence may decide to run for the nation’s top job in 2020, Rep. Maxine Waters said Sunday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joy,” and Trump would be wise to stay on his toes.

The California Democrat explained: “The rumor is that (Pence) is getting ready because maybe he believes that something might happen and he should be ready to step in, or that he could run in 2020 and win. So I don’t think that we should be concerned about him. Trump should be concerned about him.”

The Hill reported that Waters, who often slams the president’s policies, was reacting to a New York Times story. On Saturday, the newspaper quoted Pence advisers who revealed that the vice president has been thinking about launching a White House bid if Trump is not in the race. The following day, Pence described the report as “laughable and absurd.” He issued a written statement insisting that “the American people know I could not be more honored to be working side by side with a president who is making America great again.”

Waters argued that recent embarrassing leaks regarding Trump and members of his administration are evidence that the president is in trouble. “If the people around you are leaking in the way that they’re doing, they are trying to tell us something,” she said. “Of course, we don’t want classified information leaked out and I don’t think that they would do that with a credible president. They’re doing that to this president because he has defined himself as someone who cannot be trusted. … The first thing they need to do is start with the president. The president gave classified information to Russians in the White House and our ally Israel was very upset with us, so start with him.”

Waters warned that Trump might face impeachment for his alleged Russian connections, obstruction of justice, conflicts of interest and other scandals. She predicted that Congress will begin the process of removing the president from office if he fires special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating charges that the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. “I believe that if he moves on Mueller, that he has crossed the line," Waters declared. “It’s a combination of that kind of thing and the information that’s going to come out about him that would cause impeachment.”

The Hill noted that Waters also addressed the issue during her Friday appearance on ABC’s “The View.” Host Joy Behar asked: “Do you think Pence will be better than Trump if he were impeached?” The congresswoman responded: “No, and when we finish with Trump we have to go and get Putin. He’s next.” When Behar asked “Putin or Pence” Waters apparently changed her mind. “Uh, Pence,” she said. Behar shot back: “We’ll get two for one, with Trump and Putin, then we got to go after Pence.”

Waters told “The View” that she is “not at all” concerned about government leaks. “I am so glad they’re telling us what’s going on,” she said. “I need to hear these conversations. Unfortunately, this is his fault. He is in a White House where he’s got people working for him that don’t believe in him, don’t like what he’s doing, and they’re trying to tell the American public something.”
